I was hoping to maybe hike up Cadillac Mountain in the coming weeks by ascending the Gorge Path and descending via the Cadillac North Ridge Trail. Has anyone done this loop before and could speak to whether this time of year would be a good time to try it? The temperatures for the days I am considering don't appear to be dipping below freezing, but if every rock is going to be slick on the route, that would make me reconsider. Also, are there any portions of these trails that resemble the scary portions of the Beehive or Champlain? (not a fan of heights). Thanks.
Hiking up Cadillac Mountain via the Gorge Path and descending via the Cadillac North Ridge Trail is a fantastic choice! However, there are a few things to keep in mind, especially considering the time of year and your concerns about slick rocks and exposure to heights.
1. Weather and Conditions: This time of year (late fall) can be a bit tricky, as temperatures typically hover above freezing during the day but may drop below freezing at night. Early mornings or evenings might see frost or ice on the trails, especially in shaded sections. The Gorge Path, in particular, can get slippery if there's any moisture, as it involves some rock scrambling. It's important to check the weather forecast regularly for freezing temperatures or rain, as wet rocks can be very slick. If the forecast looks favorable, you should be fine, but always keep an eye out for any ice buildup.
2. Trail Difficulty and Exposure: The Gorge Path is a challenging, somewhat strenuous ascent, involving some rock scrambling. However, it’s not known for having the extreme exposure found on other trails like the Beehive or Champlain Mountain. There are sections where you’ll need to use your hands for balance and to navigate around boulders, but nothing as steep or exposed as the more difficult parts of the Beehive or Champlain. If you’re nervous about heights, you should still feel comfortable on this trail, but it's always a good idea to take your time and plan carefully. There’s a good mix of terrain, including some forested areas, so it shouldn’t feel overly exposed.
3. Descent via Cadillac North Ridge: The Cadillac North Ridge Trail is a gentler descent compared to the steepness of the Gorge Path. It’s more of a gradual decline with great views, but it’s still rocky and uneven in places. While it's not as challenging as some of the other paths in Acadia, it does have some rocky stretches that could be slippery in wet conditions. The North Ridge is also one of the more popular trails, so it tends to be well-maintained, making it a safer option for a descent after the Gorge Path.
4. Tips:
5. Overall, the hike should be safe and enjoyable as long as you’re prepared for the terrain and weather conditions. If you’re not comfortable with any section of the trail, remember that Acadia offers plenty of other hikes with less exposure that still provide amazing views. The Cadillac Summit Road is also an option if you're just looking for the views without the hike, though I suspect you’ll want to enjoy the challenge of the trails!
Have a great hike, and stay safe!
