I just got a letter in the mail with a sticker to replace my I pass transponder. I can try calling customer service on Monday with my questions, but I thought I would post here to see what you guys think. I live in Wisconsin so only use the Illinois tollways occasionally.
Right now I have two vehicles registered on my I pass, but it looks like I will have to get a separate account for my partner as from what I read there is no sharing stickers? I suppose its not a big deal, but has anyone found a way around that?
The other question I thought of is I've used my I pass in rental cars in Florida by registering the plate of the rental car. It appears I won't be able to do that anymore either, which is too bad because the rental car companies add fees to use their system.
For those who have replaced their transponders are the stickers working as well as the transponders? I rarely had an issue with unpaid tolls with the transponder.
It sounds like you’ve got a few good questions regarding the new I-PASS stickers, so I’ll try to address each one in detail.
1. Sharing Stickers with Your Partner:
Unfortunately, it seems the new I-PASS stickers are tied to individual vehicles and cannot be shared between multiple vehicles, even if they’re registered to the same account. While the old transponders could be moved between vehicles, the new stickers are intended to be affixed to one specific vehicle. This means your partner would need their own account if they want a sticker, which may not be the most convenient solution. While this does create an extra step, it’s worth noting that you can still manage multiple vehicles under one account—just with separate stickers for each vehicle. There is no known "workaround" at the moment to share stickers, though it’s always a good idea to double-check with customer service in case there’s a special exception.
2. Using I-PASS with Rental Cars in Florida:
Previously, you were able to register a rental car’s plate number with your I-PASS account, allowing you to use it in other states like Florida without having to pay additional fees for the rental company’s toll system. It’s unfortunate that this feature may no longer be available with the new stickers. The sticker-based system seems to be more vehicle-specific, and as of now, it doesn’t seem that rental cars can be registered under your account in the same way. You might have to consider paying the toll fees through the rental company or exploring toll transponder rental options from rental agencies, though this will likely come with an extra fee. Another possibility is using a toll pass that works across different states (like SunPass in Florida) and using it alongside your I-PASS, but again, this would depend on the car rental company’s setup.
3. Sticker Performance Compared to Transponder:
As for how well the new stickers work, most reports from users so far suggest that they perform just as well as the old transponders. There may be occasional issues depending on the type of vehicle (e.g., some large trucks or vehicles with tinted windows might cause problems), but for the majority of drivers, the stickers seem to function well in terms of detecting tolls. The I-PASS system is designed to be reliable, so unless you encounter a specific issue (such as with the angle of the sticker or sensor placement), you should expect similar performance to the old transponder. Some users have reported occasional delays or issues at tollbooths, but these appear to be rare and often related to specific toll lane configurations.
4. Other Considerations:
Overall, the new I-PASS stickers are designed to be easy to use and should offer similar functionality to the old transponders. However, for your partner and rental cars, it seems that you will need to set up separate accounts or manage your usage through the rental company’s toll system. Hopefully, these changes will help you make the most out of your I-PASS account moving forward!
