Is it worth visiting Catalina with my dog?

I've been to Catalina several times, but now I have a well behaved, gentle 11 lb. mini-pinscher who travels with me almost everywhere. I was hoping to show my wife and relatives Catalina Island. After reading the restrictions on dogs, it seems like it's not worth spending 3 days with my dog who can't go anywhere on the Island aside from a few places in Avalon.

Can someone elaborate on the current status quo?

Woof!

Catalina Island is a beautiful destination, but it has strict regulations regarding pets, which can limit what you can do with your dog. While well-behaved dogs are welcomed in some areas, much of the island is off-limits to pets, particularly in natural preserves and most hiking trails.

In Avalon, where most visitors stay, dogs are allowed in limited areas. Key points to consider include:

  • Dogs are permitted on sidewalks and in town areas, as long as they are on a leash.
  • Some hotels and vacation rentals accept dogs, but this varies, and additional fees may apply.
  • Dogs are allowed in certain parks or outdoor dining areas, but not in most hiking areas, beaches, or wildlife-protected zones.
  • Transport: Most ferry services allow small dogs onboard, typically in carriers, though rules vary by company.

Activities you can enjoy with your dog include walking around Avalon, visiting pet-friendly patios or shops, and staying in dog-friendly accommodations. However, major attractions like Catalina Casino tours, the Wrigley Memorial, and many natural preserves will be off-limits.

Additional considerations:

  • If your main goal is to explore the island’s natural beauty, trails, or beaches, it may be frustrating with a dog due to the restrictions.
  • For a short visit focused on town activities, dining, and casual strolls, bringing your dog could still be enjoyable.
  • Always bring water, a leash, and clean-up supplies, as facilities for dogs are limited outside of Avalon.

In summary, Catalina Island can be visited with a small dog, but the experience will be mostly restricted to Avalon and a few designated areas. If the focus of your trip is outdoor exploration beyond town, it may not be worth bringing your dog for a 3-day stay. If you are happy to enjoy the town, casual walks, and pet-friendly accommodations, it can still be a pleasant visit.
