Reno for 1 night.

We're heading to Reno early Feb for one night. We arrive about noon and the plan is calls for exploring Reno the rest of the day and staying at El Dorado on a comp.

With only one day what are the highlights we should hit?

We'll have a car but don't mind walking around either.

With only one day in Reno, you’ll want to focus on a mix of the city’s signature attractions, some easy walking, and perhaps a scenic drive if time allows. Staying at the El Dorado gives you a convenient base on the south side of the downtown area, close to many highlights.

Here are some key things to consider for your day:

  • Downtown Riverwalk: Start by exploring the Truckee Riverwalk, which runs through the heart of downtown. It’s a pleasant area for walking with public art, small shops, and cafes along the way.
  • Reno Arch: A must-see landmark is the famous “Reno, The Biggest Little City in the World” arch. It’s great for a quick photo stop and is right in the downtown area.
  • Midtown District: If you enjoy local shops, coffee, and murals, Midtown has a trendy vibe with boutiques, breweries, and small eateries. Easy to explore on foot or by a short drive.
  • National Automobile Museum: About 5-10 minutes from El Dorado, this museum has one of the largest collections of classic cars in the country. It’s highly rated, easy to navigate, and a fun indoor option if the weather is cold.

For food and drinks:

  • Consider lunch or dinner at the El Dorado’s own restaurants or nearby downtown spots. Reno has a mix of casual and upscale dining, including Italian, American, and Asian cuisines.
  • If you want local flavor, try a microbrewery or a small gastropub in the downtown or Midtown area.

Optional scenic or short-drive activities:

  • Virginia Street Historic District: See historic buildings and landmarks along this central street. Can be combined with a walk along the Riverwalk.
  • Peavine Peak Drive: If the weather and time allow, a short drive up Peavine Peak gives panoramic views of Reno and the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains. Good for photos and a brief outdoor experience without strenuous hiking.
  • Lake Tahoe (Optional, if timing allows): About 45 minutes to 1 hour from Reno, but with just one day it may be too rushed unless you prefer a quick scenic drive rather than a stop-and-explore approach.

Tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as downtown and Midtown areas are best explored on foot.
  • Check opening hours for museums and attractions, as February hours can vary.
  • Allow some flexibility for gambling or entertainment at El Dorado if you enjoy casino amenities.

In summary, focus on downtown Reno and Midtown for walking, the Truckee Riverwalk, Reno Arch, and one major indoor attraction like the National Automobile Museum. Add a short scenic drive or viewpoint if time allows, and you’ll get a full experience of the city in a single day.
