Park Closure

Hello! I am planning a trip with my husband in June. We were all set to book our stay and then I happened to see that the state park will be closed until at least July. I’m just hoping to hear from those familiar with the area, would you consider that a deal-breaker or reason to shelve Ludington for a different year? We were also considering South Haven but liked the small town feel Ludington seems to have. Thanks in advance for any help!

It sounds like you were really looking forward to your trip to Ludington, and the state park closure is certainly unfortunate. However, whether it’s a deal-breaker really depends on what you were hoping to get out of your visit. While the state park is a great part of the area, Ludington still has a lot to offer even without it, so it might not necessarily be a reason to shelve your plans for the year.

What you can still enjoy in Ludington:

  • Ludington State Park Alternatives: While the state park is closed, you can still enjoy the beautiful waterfront and beaches in the area. Ludington’s public beach is lovely and offers scenic views of Lake Michigan. You could also visit the nearby Big Sable Point Lighthouse (if it’s open) or go for a peaceful walk along the Riverside Park for great views of the river and harbor.
  • Downtown Ludington: The small-town charm you’re seeking is still there. Explore the local shops, coffeehouses, and restaurants. There are some great places for lunch or dinner, like the Jamesport Brewing Co. for a casual meal and a beer, or House of Flavors for an iconic Michigan dining experience.
  • Ludington Harbor: If you enjoy scenic views and relaxing on the water, you can take a boat ride or even enjoy a day at the Ludington Harbor. The Ludington Lighthouse is another beautiful spot for a stroll and some photography.

If you’re still unsure, here are some things to consider:

  • South Haven vs. Ludington: South Haven is also a lovely town, but it tends to be a bit more touristy compared to Ludington, which might have more of the small-town feel you’re looking for. South Haven offers more beach access, but Ludington has some hidden gems that might be worth visiting once the state park reopens.
  • Alternative Nearby Parks: If you’re looking for a natural setting like Ludington State Park, consider Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park or Silver Lake State Park, both of which offer beautiful landscapes and outdoor activities. While a bit of a drive from Ludington, they could offer a similar vibe.
  • Time of Year: June is still a lovely time to visit Michigan, and other parts of the region, such as Manistee or Holland, might also have the small-town charm you’re seeking if Ludington doesn’t seem quite right this year.

Ultimately, Ludington’s charm is not only in the state park but also in its serene lakeside atmosphere, local shops, and overall ambiance. If you’re flexible and open to exploring some alternative options, you might still have a fantastic trip without the state park. But if you were really counting on the park and the hiking trails, it might be worth considering postponing your trip until the park reopens next year.

I hope this helps you decide! Enjoy your travels wherever you choose to go!
