December 2025 - Maui and which island?

Hi all,

DH and I are planning an anniversary trip next December (yes we like to plan early!) back to Hawaii. We have done Maui (west Maui - Lahaina area), Oahu and the Big Island on previous trips. We are thinking of returning to Maui as that was my favourite island (maybe staying in Kihei this time).

We are planning to go for two weeks so I would like to do another island as well - thinking of Kaui since we have never been. It seems like the winter weather might not be the best there however. Although maybe we would be ok staying on the Poipu side. Is that still recommended? We could maybe try and venture to Waimea Canyon or do a day or two on North shore if weather is cooperating?

Welcome suggestions!

Thank you.

It’s great that you’re planning your anniversary trip so far in advance! December in Hawaii is an excellent time to visit, and both Maui and Kauai offer unique experiences, so it sounds like a fantastic idea to visit both islands.

Maui is a beautiful island with diverse landscapes, and staying in Kihei offers a more laid-back experience compared to the resort-heavy areas in West Maui (Lahaina). Kihei has beautiful beaches, and you’ll be able to explore the nearby Wailea area, which is known for its luxury resorts, beaches, and excellent restaurants. Since you already enjoyed the Lahaina area, Kihei will be a great alternative, offering a more local vibe, yet still very accessible to many of Maui’s attractions like the beaches of Makena and the scenic Road to Hana. For a two-week trip, Maui offers so much variety that you’ll easily be able to fill your time with hiking, beach days, and exploring the island’s history and culture.

As for the second island, Kauai is a wonderful option, but I completely understand your concerns about the weather. The winter months in Kauai (especially on the North Shore) can be rainy and somewhat unpredictable, as Kauai is known for its lush, tropical climate. However, staying on the Poipu side (on the southern coast) is definitely a good choice, as this area tends to be drier and sunnier compared to the North Shore, even during the winter. Poipu has beautiful beaches, excellent resorts, and is close to some of the island’s top attractions, such as Spouting Horn, Allerton Garden, and Mahaulepu Beach.

If the weather is favorable during your stay, visiting the Waimea Canyon is a must. Often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," the views are absolutely breathtaking, and it’s a great spot for hiking and photography. The North Shore can still be visited, especially on days when the weather is cooperating, but it’s good to be aware that certain parts of the North Shore (like Hanalei Bay) can experience high surf and be less ideal for swimming or snorkeling during the winter months.

Other nearby islands you could consider for your second destination include:

  • Oahu – Since you’ve already been to Oahu, it might not feel as fresh, but if you’re interested in a more urban experience, the island offers plenty of activities that Maui and Kauai do not (e.g., Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, Honolulu museums). The weather is more predictable here, and it’s easy to explore the island’s natural beauty like Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, and the North Shore.
  • The Big Island – The Big Island is unique for its diverse landscapes and climate, and if you’re looking to explore volcanoes, lava fields, and black sand beaches, it could be an exciting option. December can be a bit rainy on the Hilo side, but the Kona side is typically sunnier, and you can explore places like Kailua-Kona, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and the beaches of the Kohala Coast.

In conclusion, Kauai is still highly recommended in December, particularly if you stay on the Poipu side, which offers better weather conditions. You’ll have plenty to do, and as long as you’re flexible with your plans, the island is very enjoyable. If you’re worried about the weather limiting your activities, consider the Big Island as a backup option for more diverse terrain and predictable conditions. A two-week trip to Maui and Kauai sounds perfect for a relaxing yet adventurous anniversary vacation!

Have a wonderful time planning your trip!
