Highway 70 from I5 N to Quincy
We’re planning to drive our trailer from the Bay Area to Quincy. Does anyone have advise on highway 70 road conditions? Is it extremely windy? Possibility of snow in mid April?
Any feedback would be appreciated!
Driving Highway 70 from I-5 North to Quincy in Plumas County can be a scenic but sometimes challenging route, especially with a trailer. Here’s a detailed overview to help you plan your trip in mid-April:
Highway 70 is a mountain highway that passes through the northern Sierra Nevada. The road winds through canyons, forests, and along river valleys, so it can be curvy and steep in sections.
- Road Conditions: Most of Highway 70 is paved and maintained, but there are narrow sections, especially near river crossings and in older mountain segments. Some areas have sharp curves and limited shoulder space. Trailer drivers should be cautious on switchbacks and in areas with oncoming traffic.
- Windiness: The highway can be windy due to the natural curves of the mountains and river valleys. While it’s not a “windy road” like some coastal highways, large trailers can be affected by crosswinds, particularly on exposed sections and high ridges.
- Snow Possibility: In mid-April, snow is generally melting, but occasional late-season snow or icy patches can still occur, especially at higher elevations (around Bucks Lake or Beckwourth Pass). Check the latest Caltrans road conditions before departure. Winter tires or chains may still be advisable if the weather forecast predicts a cold snap.
Other practical advice:
- Drive during daylight hours for better visibility on curves and shaded areas.
- Check for chain requirements in case of late-season snow; Caltrans provides updates online.
- Keep an eye on weather forecasts a few days in advance. Spring storms can sometimes bring unexpected snow or heavy rain to the Sierra Nevada.
- Plan fuel stops carefully—services are limited in some stretches of the highway.
- Take your time on downhill sections with a trailer—use lower gears to maintain control.
Overall, Highway 70 is a beautiful drive with river views and forested landscapes, but trailer drivers should be prepared for mountain driving conditions. In mid-April, most of the route will be snow-free, but occasional patches of snow or ice at higher elevations are possible. Planning ahead and monitoring real-time conditions will make the drive much safer and more enjoyable.
