Planning a 3-night trip to Guilin and Yangshuo in early January requires some careful sequencing to make the most of your limited time. While January is winter in Guangxi, the scenery is still pleasant, though rice terraces are less spectacular compared to summer. Here’s a detailed guide based on your questions.
1. Visiting rice terraces in early January
Rice terraces in Guangxi, particularly Longji (Dragon’s Backbone), are beautiful year-round, but in early January, the fields are mostly dormant. You will see terraced patterns with water-filled paddies and some green patches, but it won’t have the lush colors of summer or autumn. If your main goal is scenery and photography, it is optional. It is a long detour from Guilin/Yangshuo (2–3 hours each way), so it may not be worth including for only 3 days unless you have a strong interest.
2. Guilin-Yangshuo Li River cruise
If you plan to take the Li River cruise (Guilin to Yangshuo), it is convenient to stay in Guilin the first night and take the cruise the next morning. This allows you to catch the early cruise without rushing. Most 4–5 hour cruises depart mid-morning, so arriving the same day by train from Hong Kong may be tight.
3. Activities in Guilin on the first afternoon
If you stay in Guilin the first night, here are recommended short activities for the afternoon/evening:
4. Ideal sequence for 3-day trip
With 3 nights (assuming you arrive first night in Guilin and depart the last night), here’s a suggested plan:
Notes:
5. Recommended hotels with scenic views
In summary, focus on Guilin for the first night with nearby sightseeing, Li River cruise and Yangshuo countryside for Day 2, and wrap up with remaining Yangshuo sights on Day 3. Skip rice terraces for this short trip unless you wish to make a special detour. Choosing hotels with river or mountain views enhances the overall experience.
