Planning a 3-night trip to Guilin and Yangshuo in early January requires some careful sequencing to make the most of your limited time. While January is winter in Guangxi, the scenery is still pleasant, though rice terraces are less spectacular compared to summer. Here’s a detailed guide based on your questions.

1. Visiting rice terraces in early January

Rice terraces in Guangxi, particularly Longji (Dragon’s Backbone), are beautiful year-round, but in early January, the fields are mostly dormant. You will see terraced patterns with water-filled paddies and some green patches, but it won’t have the lush colors of summer or autumn. If your main goal is scenery and photography, it is optional. It is a long detour from Guilin/Yangshuo (2–3 hours each way), so it may not be worth including for only 3 days unless you have a strong interest.

2. Guilin-Yangshuo Li River cruise

If you plan to take the Li River cruise (Guilin to Yangshuo), it is convenient to stay in Guilin the first night and take the cruise the next morning. This allows you to catch the early cruise without rushing. Most 4–5 hour cruises depart mid-morning, so arriving the same day by train from Hong Kong may be tight.

3. Activities in Guilin on the first afternoon

If you stay in Guilin the first night, here are recommended short activities for the afternoon/evening:

  • Reed Flute Cave: A 1–2 hour visit with beautiful limestone formations and lighting displays.
  • Two Rivers and Four Lakes: Evening boat cruise to enjoy city lights, including the Sun and Moon Pagodas.
  • Guilin city walk or local market: Quick stroll around Zhengyang Pedestrian Street for snacks and souvenirs.

4. Ideal sequence for 3-day trip

With 3 nights (assuming you arrive first night in Guilin and depart the last night), here’s a suggested plan:

  • Day 1 – Guilin arrival: Arrive by high-speed train, check in. Afternoon visit Reed Flute Cave and/or Two Rivers and Four Lakes. Evening walk or local food market.
  • Day 2 – Guilin to Yangshuo: Morning Li River cruise (Guilin to Yangshuo). Afternoon explore Yangshuo countryside: bamboo rafting on Yulong River, cycling around villages, visit Xingping Ancient Town. Evening stroll and dinner at West Street.
  • Day 3 – Yangshuo and return: Optional Impression Liu Sanjie show (evening) or morning scenic spots if time allows. Depart Yangshuo by bus/train back to Guilin for onward travel.

Notes:

  • It is challenging to include rice terraces in a 3-day itinerary; they are better suited for a separate 1–2 day trip from Guilin.
  • “Two Rivers and Four Lakes” evening cruise is recommended for Guilin city lights; schedule it for the first evening.
  • Sun and Moon Pagodas can be visited during the evening cruise or separately if time allows.

5. Recommended hotels with scenic views

  • Guilin: Shangri-La Hotel Guilin, Sheraton Guilin Hotel, or Guilin Bravo Hotel – some rooms offer Li River or city lake views.
  • Yangshuo: Yangshuo Mountain Retreat, Alila Yangshuo, or Yangshuo Village Resort – these resorts offer beautiful karst mountain views and proximity to Yulong River.

In summary, focus on Guilin for the first night with nearby sightseeing, Li River cruise and Yangshuo countryside for Day 2, and wrap up with remaining Yangshuo sights on Day 3. Skip rice terraces for this short trip unless you wish to make a special detour. Choosing hotels with river or mountain views enhances the overall experience.
