Cormorant fishermen photos
Is it necessary to join any photography tour to take pictures of cormorant fishermen at Xingpin +think more likely?) or Yangshuo?
Are there are specific spots/locations to look out for them? I am guessing an option is to 'tio' the fishermen, after all this is their main income these days.
Thanks
Photographing cormorant fishermen along the Li River in Yangshuo and Xingping does not strictly require joining a photography tour, but tours can be helpful if you want guidance on timing, lighting, and locations to capture the best shots.
Key points to consider:
- The traditional cormorant fishermen are most often found near Xingping, a small town upstream of Yangshuo, which is famous for its iconic karst river scenery. Some fishermen still operate in Yangshuo, but Xingping is more picturesque.
- Best times for photography are early morning or late afternoon, when the river is calm and the light is soft.
- Many photographers wait along the riverbanks, or hire a small boat to get closer to the fishermen without disturbing them.
Interaction and tipping:
- It is common practice to 'tio' (tip) the fishermen if you take photos or ride with them. This has become a part of their livelihood.
- Respect their space and avoid disrupting their work; approach politely and ask permission if you want to get closer for photos.
Summary:
- You can photograph them independently, especially if you know the locations and best times.
- Photography tours are optional but useful for first-time visitors seeking optimal shots.
- Focus on Xingping for the classic scenery, and be prepared to tip if interacting directly with the fishermen.
