Base for exploring SW Florida

We are 4 seniors looking for an area to rent an Airbnb and explore SW Florida, mainly Ft. Myers and Naples areas. I am leaning toward staying in Naples or Bonilla Springs based on recommendations from a friend. Is it too far south spend a few days in the Ft. Myers area?

For seniors looking to explore Southwest Florida, choosing a base that balances convenience, comfort, and proximity to attractions is key. Naples and Bonita Springs are both excellent options depending on your priorities.

Naples is further south than Fort Myers—about a 45- to 60-minute drive—but it offers a charming downtown area, beautiful beaches, and a variety of restaurants and shops. Bonita Springs is roughly halfway between Naples and Fort Myers, making it a convenient compromise if you want easier access to both cities.

Considerations for staying in Naples or Bonita Springs:

  • Naples: Offers a more relaxed, upscale atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and nice walking areas. Great for those who enjoy arts, dining, and a slower pace.
  • Bonita Springs: Centrally located between Naples and Fort Myers, which can reduce daily driving time if you plan to explore both areas. It’s also close to Barefoot Beach and the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.
  • Travel to Fort Myers: From Naples, spending a day in Fort Myers is very doable. The drive is scenic and generally under an hour. Traffic can vary, but for a day trip, it’s reasonable.

Additional tips:

  • Renting a car is recommended, as public transportation in SW Florida is limited and attractions are spread out.
  • Check Airbnbs for amenities like easy parking, single-level homes, and proximity to restaurants or grocery stores, which can make a stay more comfortable for seniors.
  • Consider splitting time: a few days in Naples or Bonita Springs and a couple in Fort Myers or Sanibel Island if you want to explore beaches and natural attractions without long daily drives.

In summary, Naples is a lovely base with more amenities and charm, while Bonita Springs offers more central access for day trips to Fort Myers. Driving a day to Fort Myers from Naples is not too far, so you can comfortably explore both areas without needing to change lodging.
