Alternative to taxi, HNL to Ala Moana hotel, Waikiki

Suggestions? Are there challenges with using Uber or Lyft (and is either one better than the other?) Two retired women with luggage, we don't wanna drag it a lot after a long flight. Also need transport back to HNL the next evening for an overseas flight. TIA!

If you're looking for an alternative to taxis for transportation from Honolulu International Airport (HNL) to your hotel in Waikiki (Ala Moana area), both Uber and Lyft are excellent options that are widely used on Oahu. Here’s a breakdown of your options and some things to consider:

  • Uber and Lyft:

Both Uber and Lyft are reliable choices, and generally, the service and pricing are comparable. The main differences are in the availability of drivers and their apps' user interfaces, but either one should work fine for your trip. They are both accessible via their respective apps, and you can select the car type based on how much luggage you have (e.g., choosing a larger vehicle like UberXL or Lyft XL for more space if needed).

Uber and Lyft offer curbside pickup at the airport. Once you’ve collected your luggage, follow the signs for "Ride Share" or check the app for specific pickup zones. The ride to Ala Moana Hotel in Waikiki should take about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and costs around $30-$40 (one-way) for a standard car, or slightly more for larger vehicles or peak times.

  • Pros and Cons:

    Pros of Uber and Lyft:

    • Convenient door-to-door service without the need to drag luggage around.
    • Affordable compared to traditional taxis.
    • You can track your ride and know exactly when your driver is arriving.
    • Good availability and flexibility in terms of time.

    Cons of Uber and Lyft:

    • It can sometimes be hard to find your driver in crowded pickup zones, especially during busy times.
    • Prices can surge during high demand (e.g., during events or rush hour).

  • Taxi Services:

Traditional taxis are another option, although they can be more expensive compared to Uber and Lyft. The airport has a designated taxi line, and the fare to Waikiki should be around $40-$50, but again, taxis are often more expensive and not as flexible with vehicle sizes. However, if you prefer a fixed price with no surge pricing, a taxi may be the way to go. The wait time for a taxi may also be longer during peak periods compared to the apps where drivers are already in the area.

  • Shuttle Services (For Return to HNL):

For your return to HNL the next evening, many shuttle services offer shared rides at a lower price than taxis or private rides. Some shuttle services will pick you up directly from your hotel. You can book these online in advance or at your hotel’s concierge desk. The price for shared shuttles is typically around $15-$25 per person, but it can take longer as the shuttle may stop at other hotels along the way.

Summary: For convenience and comfort, I recommend using Uber or Lyft for your trip from HNL to Ala Moana Hotel, especially since you won’t have to handle your luggage too much. Either service is fine, so it comes down to personal preference or availability in the app. For your return to the airport, if you don’t mind a slightly slower service, a shared shuttle might be the most cost-effective option. Otherwise, booking a private Uber or Lyft is still a great choice for a comfortable and timely ride.
