Vegas to LA road trip

I’m renting a car to drive to downtown LA from Vegas - does anyone know if there are tolls along the way? Trying to determine if I need to add a transponder from the rental firm or not

When driving from Las Vegas to downtown Los Angeles, there are a few things to keep in mind regarding tolls and whether you'll need a transponder for your rental car.

1. Tolls on the Route: - The most common route for this trip is via I-15 South, which does not have any tolls along the entire highway. However, you may encounter tolls if you decide to take any alternative routes or highways, such as express lanes in Los Angeles or certain parts of the city. For example, some of the toll roads and express lanes in the LA area require a toll, especially around the city or near highways like the 110 (Harbor Freeway) and 10 (Santa Monica Freeway).

  • I-15 (Las Vegas to California): No tolls along this route, so you don't need a transponder for the main stretch of the drive.
  • Los Angeles Express Lanes: If you plan to drive in express lanes once you reach LA, you will need a transponder (known as a FasTrak device) to pay tolls. These lanes are designed to speed up traffic but require payment.

2. Do You Need a Transponder? - For the drive itself, you don’t need a transponder unless you are planning on using express lanes in Los Angeles. Most rental companies offer the option to rent a transponder for an additional fee, which will make things easier if you plan to use the express lanes around LA. If you’re only driving on regular highways and interstates, you should be fine without one.

3. Tips for the Drive: - The I-15 is a direct route, so you won’t need to worry about tolls until you enter LA. Be sure to check your route for specific areas where tolls might apply, especially if you plan to use express lanes or take local shortcuts through LA. - If you decide to take a detour for scenic views or alternative routes, some of those roads might have tolls as well, so keep an eye out for signage.

In short, while you don’t need a transponder for the bulk of the trip from Las Vegas to LA, you’ll likely need one if you’re using any express lanes or toll roads in Los Angeles itself. It’s a good idea to ask your rental company about adding the transponder for peace of mind and convenience.
