Mogao caves stairs

We are seniors with minor disabilities visiting the caves in May. I need to know how many stairs there are and if they have handrails. Also, are the stairs evenly spaced or are they all in the same place?

The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang are a large complex of Buddhist grottoes spread over several hills, with access to some caves requiring climbing stairs. For seniors or visitors with minor disabilities, it is important to know what to expect in terms of accessibility.

Stairs and Accessibility:

  • The main pathways to the caves involve several flights of stairs, typically ranging from 100 to 200 steps depending on which caves you wish to visit. The caves at the lower levels have fewer steps, while the higher caves, including those with major murals, require more climbing.
  • Most stairways are equipped with handrails, but the condition and height may vary. In some older or less-visited sections, handrails can be sparse or uneven.
  • The steps are not uniformly spaced throughout the complex. Some staircases have even steps, while others are uneven or vary in height, especially when following the natural slope of the hill.

Tips for Seniors and Visitors with Minor Disabilities:

  • Consider hiring a guide or joining a tour that focuses on accessibility, as they can advise which caves are easier to access.
  • If possible, visit only the lower caves to avoid strenuous climbing; these still offer many impressive murals.
  • Wear sturdy shoes and take breaks when needed. Bring water and sun protection, as some stairways are exposed to the elements.
  • Some areas offer shuttle vehicles or paths to reduce walking distance to certain cave entrances, so inquire about these options at the ticket office.

In summary, while many caves are accessible via stairs with handrails, the steps vary in height and spacing. Seniors and visitors with minor disabilities should plan carefully, focus on lower or more accessible caves, and allow extra time for the visit to avoid fatigue.
