From Page to Kanab ..Marble Canyon, Lee's Ferry? other ideas

Hello,

We are trying to fill a gap in our itinerary in norther AZ and Southern Utah. We will be in Page for 3 days, then we were supposed to be at the North Rim (but sadly that's a no-go), then on to 2 days of hiking at Paria Canyon with a guide at White Pocket and Paw Hole. (We will be staying at Kanab while there).

What else would you recommend en route to/or in the area of Kanab or any "must sees" at Glen Canyon that would be relatively convenient to staying at Wahweap? (we will be taking a hike at Antelope Canyon, paddling the lake, horse shoe bend, the dam).

Do you recommend hiking at Marble Canyon or Lee's Ferry and if so, what would you suggest?

Thanks!

Kathy

Your itinerary from Page to Kanab offers some incredible scenery and adventure opportunities. Since you’re already covering major highlights like Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell, and the Glen Canyon Dam, there are a few additional stops and hikes worth considering along the route and nearby Marble Canyon/Lee’s Ferry area.

Marble Canyon and Lee’s Ferry are both scenic and relatively low-traffic compared to more popular spots. They provide great opportunities for short hikes, photography, and access to the Colorado River without straying far from your route.

  • Marble Canyon: Consider a short hike along the Rim Trail for stunning views of the Colorado River cutting through the canyon. The trail is easy to moderate, and it’s great for photography, especially during early morning or late afternoon light. If you like geology, the Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center is nearby and provides informative displays plus a safe pedestrian bridge crossing the Colorado River.
  • Lee’s Ferry: This is a historically significant site (starting point for Grand Canyon river trips). There are short, easy hikes along the river and small beaches where you can relax. It’s also a great spot for spotting wildlife and birds. For a slightly longer hike, you could explore the Lonely Dell Ranch Trail.
  • Vermilion Cliffs National Monument: En route to Kanab, consider a drive or short stop at viewpoints like Paria View or the scenic overlooks along Highway 89. The area offers unique desert landscapes and color contrasts that are perfect for photography without requiring strenuous hiking.
  • Lees Ferry to Navajo Bridge: Walk across the historic Navajo Bridge to enjoy views of Marble Canyon and the Colorado River. It’s a short walk but highly rewarding.
  • Lake Powell / Glen Canyon area: Since you plan to paddle the lake, you could also consider a short kayak or boat trip to explore side canyons, which are often less crowded than the main lake areas.

In summary, Marble Canyon and Lee’s Ferry are worthwhile for short hikes, photo stops, and a bit of local history. They are convenient detours if you are staying near Wahweap in Page. The hikes here are generally easy to moderate, so they complement your more adventurous hikes at Paria Canyon and White Pocket.

Additional tips:

  • Start early to avoid midday heat, especially in August.
  • Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, even for short hikes.
  • If time allows, a quick stop at the Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center adds historical context and photo opportunities without taking much time.

Overall, combining these stops with your existing plans gives you a rich mix of scenery, history, and adventure without significantly extending your driving time.
