Kihei or Ka'anapali ?

Hello! Our family is hoping to go to Maui end of March. Last minute planning. Lol What would be the best area for two adults one teen?

We would love a swimmable beach resort or condo if possible. Best area to walk around and area either the sunniest weather! :) Thank you!

It’s great that you’re planning a trip to Maui! Both Kihei and Ka'anapali are fantastic areas to stay, but each has its own vibe and advantages depending on what you’re looking for. Let’s break down the key differences to help you decide which might be best for your family of two adults and one teen.

Kihei is located on the sunny south shore of Maui and is known for its more relaxed, laid-back vibe. This area has some great swimmable beaches and is often less crowded than Ka'anapali. It’s also generally sunnier, which can be a big plus if you want to avoid rain and enjoy more beach time. Kihei has a number of affordable condos and resorts, many of which are located right on the beach. There are also plenty of shops, restaurants, and casual spots to walk around. While Kihei is quieter compared to some of Maui’s more tourist-heavy areas, it still offers a good range of activities and local charm.

  • Swimmable Beaches: Kamaole Beach Parks (I, II, III) are fantastic for families. The waters are calm and perfect for swimming, and the beaches are great for lounging and picnicking.
  • Walkability: Kihei has a nice selection of shops, cafes, and small restaurants along South Kihei Road, making it easy to walk around. You can explore the area on foot without the need for a car at all times.
  • Weather: Kihei generally has some of the best weather on the island, with sunny days and minimal rainfall. It’s one of the driest areas in Maui, which makes it perfect for outdoor activities and beach days.

Ka'anapali is located on the west side of Maui, near Lahaina, and is a more popular tourist destination with a bustling resort area. If you’re looking for a more “traditional” resort experience with large hotels, luxury condos, and lots of amenities, Ka'anapali might be a great choice. This area is home to the famous Ka'anapali Beach, known for its long stretch of golden sand and clear waters. There’s also a lot to do here, from shopping at Whalers Village to snorkeling and other water sports. If your family enjoys a mix of relaxation, luxury, and activities, Ka'anapali is hard to beat.

  • Swimmable Beaches: Ka'anapali Beach is great for swimming and water activities. It’s a perfect spot for families with its clear waters and relatively calm conditions, though it can get crowded depending on the time of day.
  • Walkability: Ka'anapali is very walkable, especially around the resort area and the nearby Whalers Village, which has shopping, restaurants, and even entertainment. You can walk along the scenic beachwalk that stretches from the resorts to Black Rock, an excellent snorkeling spot.
  • Weather: While Ka'anapali is generally sunny, it can be a bit more humid than Kihei, and rain showers can occur more frequently, especially in the winter months. However, the weather is usually very pleasant, and there’s always something to do indoors or outdoors.

Summary: If you’re looking for a more relaxed, quieter area with easy access to great beaches and sunny weather, Kihei is a great choice. It’s perfect for families who prefer a less commercialized atmosphere and enjoy walking around local areas. The beaches here are very family-friendly, and the prices tend to be more affordable for condos and rentals.

On the other hand, if you want more of a resort experience with plenty of activities, shopping, and easy access to high-end amenities, Ka'anapali is a better fit. It offers a great combination of beach access, dining, shopping, and a lively atmosphere, with lots of opportunities for outdoor adventures and entertainment.

Both areas have swimmable beaches and are great for a family vacation, so it ultimately comes down to whether you prefer a more relaxed local experience (Kihei) or a vibrant resort destination (Ka'anapali). Either way, you're sure to have a wonderful time in Maui!
