College Park Station parking question
We will be staying a week near the College Park train station. It will be the end of July. We want to take the train into DC each day. How crowded does the parking get at the station, will we be able to find parking? Also, how often do the trains run weekdays to/from DC? And third, is the area around the station/parking safe?
College Park–University of Maryland Station is a popular commuter hub, especially for those traveling to and from Washington, D.C. Here are answers to your questions:
- Parking Availability: During weekdays, especially in the morning, parking at the College Park Station can get crowded, particularly when the university is in session. However, during the summer, the demand for parking is typically lower since the university is on break, so you should be able to find a spot. The station offers both outdoor and garage parking options. It is recommended to arrive early in the morning if you want to ensure a space, though there is often parking available later in the day as well.
- Train Frequency: The MARC train service runs frequently during weekdays, typically every 20 to 30 minutes during peak hours (morning and evening rush hours) and less frequently during off-peak hours. In general, MARC trains from College Park to D.C. (Union Station) run from around 5:30 AM to 10:30 PM on weekdays, though exact times can vary. For specific schedules, it’s a good idea to check the MARC website closer to your travel date for up-to-date information on departure times.
- Safety Around the Station: The area around College Park Station is generally safe, particularly during the daytime when there is a lot of commuter activity. However, like any busy transit area, it’s always wise to be cautious, especially late at night when fewer people are around. College Park is a relatively quiet suburban area, but you may want to stay aware of your surroundings when walking to and from your car or the train station. The station itself is well-lit, and there are security cameras in place. It’s also good to know that the neighborhood surrounding the station has a mix of residential and commercial areas, with the University of Maryland nearby, which adds to the overall safety of the region.
Additional Tips:
- Check the MARC schedule ahead of time, especially if you're planning to return to College Park during peak hours, as trains can get crowded during rush hour.
- If you’re planning to leave your car for an extended period, make sure to park in the designated areas to avoid fines or towing.
- If you're unfamiliar with the station or concerned about parking availability, you could also consider using a nearby Metro station (Greenbelt Metro is a short drive away) or a nearby Park & Ride lot for additional options.
Overall, staying near College Park Station should be convenient for daily trips into D.C., with good access to public transportation and relatively safe surroundings. Just be sure to arrive early during peak times for the best chance at parking.
