Government Shutdown: Alternatives to Petrified Nat. Park.
So, I'm booking 2 nights in Winslow with 2 school age kids in early April. I understand that Grand Canyon won't be cut off, but Petrified will be shutdown if there's a Federal Government shutdown. So I'm looking for a one day alternative to the park. So something in addition to the Meteor Crater?
If Petrified Forest National Park is closed due to a government shutdown, there are several nearby alternatives that can provide an enjoyable and educational day trip for you and your kids. Since you’ll already be visiting Meteor Crater, consider combining it with one or more of the following options:
1. Explore Local Natural Attractions
- Painted Desert Rim Overlook: Even if the park is closed, you can view parts of the Painted Desert from public areas along Route 66 and nearby viewpoints. The colors and formations are stunning, especially in the morning or late afternoon light.
- Homolovi State Park: Located near Winslow, this park features ancient Hopi archaeological sites, picnic areas, and easy trails. It’s a great way to combine light hiking with history and culture.
- Little Painted Desert County Park: Free and open to the public, this small park offers excellent views of colorful badlands formations, ideal for short walks and photo opportunities with kids.
2. Interactive and Educational Stops
- Standin’ on the Corner Park in Winslow: This iconic Route 66 spot is fun for kids to stretch their legs, take photos, and enjoy a brief walk. It’s a quirky Arizona landmark tied to music and pop culture.
- Winslow Visitor Center and Route 66 Museum: Offers exhibits on local history, Route 66 heritage, and geology that kids often find engaging.
- Walnut Canyon or Lava River Cave: Although slightly farther away near Flagstaff, these offer fascinating geological formations and short trails that are kid-friendly.
3. Combine With Meteor Crater for a Full Day
- Start the day at Meteor Crater with guided tours and interactive exhibits about space and geology.
- Afterward, visit Little Painted Desert County Park or Homolovi State Park for hiking and picnic opportunities.
- Stop in Winslow at Standin’ on the Corner Park for a fun break and photos.
By combining these spots, you can have a well-rounded, educational, and outdoor-focused day without needing to enter Petrified Forest National Park. The key is to focus on accessible, public lands and kid-friendly activities, which keeps your itinerary flexible in case of closures.
