Is Dry Tortugas Worth the visit?

Hi everyone ... we are planning on a trip to the Keys in May and will only be here for 5 days. As international visitors this could be the one and only time we get here.

Whilst Dry Tortugas day trip looks very nice, I'm wondering if it's worth taking a whole day out of our week when there seems so much else to see and do across the Keys. I have family members that won't fly on a seaplane, so the half day seaplane version isn't really an option.

Thanks for any opinions.

Dry Tortugas National Park is often described as one of the most unique destinations in the Florida Keys, but whether it’s “worth it” depends on your interests and the type of experience you want during your limited 5-day trip.

The park is located about 70 miles west of Key West and is accessible only by ferry or seaplane. The ferry trip takes roughly 2.5 hours each way, making it essentially a full-day commitment. Once there, you’ll find:

  • Fort Jefferson: A massive historic coastal fortress with fascinating history and great photo opportunities.
  • Pristine beaches: White sand, clear shallow waters, and minimal crowds—perfect for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing.
  • Snorkeling and marine life: The waters around the islands are rich in tropical fish and coral, making it a top spot for snorkeling enthusiasts.

Considerations for your trip:

  • The ferry departs early in the morning and returns in the late afternoon, so you’ll lose most of the day to travel. If your group has family members hesitant to fly, this is the main non-negotiable option.
  • The seaplane is faster and gives you more time on the island, but as you mentioned, it’s not suitable for everyone in your party.
  • Weather and sea conditions can affect both ferry and seaplane trips, particularly in May when conditions are generally favorable but can vary.

If your goal is to experience unique wildlife, history, and one of the most isolated and beautiful beaches in the continental U.S., Dry Tortugas is truly special. However, for a shorter trip like 5 days, it’s important to weigh the following:

  • You’ll spend a significant portion of your day traveling; this may limit time for exploring other Keys attractions.
  • If you prefer a more relaxed trip with several stops, snorkeling, dining, and sunset views closer to Key West, you might prioritize things like:
    • Key West historic district and museums
    • Sunset cruises and dolphin watching tours
    • Snorkeling or diving at nearby reefs like Bahia Honda or Looe Key
    • Exploring smaller Keys like Marathon or Islamorada for kayaking or beach time

In summary, Dry Tortugas is an unforgettable destination if your group is excited about history, nature, and a remote island experience. But given your limited 5-day itinerary and family constraints with the seaplane, it might make more sense to enjoy a combination of snorkeling, beaches, and Key West exploration instead, so you can experience a variety of what the Keys have to offer without dedicating an entire day to one trip.
