Fun family activity for son’s 13th birthday - East coast?
Hi, we visit Florida frequently but mainly Orlando, Tampa or Gulf coast… we are docking in Miami early on my sons 13th birthday and have all day until our 9pm flight from Orlando…
I’m trying to find something fun for us to do - either Miami or somewhere along the drive between Miami and Orlando. We want something fun we can all do (other two kids are 14 and 6). Are there any must see state parks that way? Any fun food spots? Anything outdoorsy, sports related etc. just looking for something a bit different… any suggestions would be amazing! Thanks
With a full day between docking in Miami and your evening flight from Orlando, there are several options for a fun, memorable 13th birthday for your son, while keeping the whole family engaged. You have a mix of urban, outdoor, and adventurous opportunities along the way.
In Miami before heading north, consider starting with some unique attractions:
- Wynwood Walls & Street Art Tour: A vibrant outdoor art experience where teens can enjoy graffiti murals and take photos.
- Miami Beach Boardwalk: Rent bikes or e-scooters and enjoy a scenic ride along the beach for some active fun.
- Everglades Adventure: If you leave early enough, an airboat tour in the nearby Everglades National Park can be thrilling for kids and adults alike.
As you head north toward Orlando (roughly 4 hours by car), there are some interesting stops to break up the drive:
- Jonathan Dickinson State Park: Near Hobe Sound, this park offers hiking, kayaking, or a short nature walk. Great for a quick outdoor adventure and picnic.
- Vero Beach: A stop for a beach walk or casual lunch; there are fun family-friendly restaurants and ice cream shops.
- Cape Canaveral / Cocoa Beach area: If your timing allows, a brief stop at the beach or the Cocoa Beach Pier can add some outdoor fun, and the pier has arcade games, mini-golf, and casual dining.
Closer to Orlando, you can consider:
- Orlando Sports Complexes: For a short, active birthday celebration, you could stop at an indoor trampoline park, go-kart track, or mini-golf course near the city.
- Fun Food Stops: Look for unique themed restaurants, like T-Rex Café or Rainforest Café, which can double as a birthday treat.
Tips to maximize the day:
- Plan one major stop and a couple of smaller stops to avoid feeling rushed.
- Pack snacks and drinks for the road to minimize downtime.
- Consider time needed to return rental car or navigate to the airport, especially with three kids.
Overall, a combination of a morning Miami activity (like Wynwood or a beach ride), a mid-drive state park or scenic stop, and a fun birthday meal near Orlando can make it a memorable day without being stressful.
