Best time to visit San Francisco

Seems like when i google it it always says sept or oct is optimal time to visit san francisco. Yet what i like about spring is it stays dark out a lot later. As a solo traveller i don't really want to walk around san francisco after dark. If i went in the spring i'd be able to sightsee later and have a later dinner. Is there anything wrong with coming april or may?

Visiting San Francisco in April or May is perfectly fine and can actually be a very enjoyable time, especially for solo travelers who prefer longer daylight hours. The city does experience its best weather in September and October, which is why those months are often recommended—they tend to be warmer and sunnier with less fog. However, springtime has its own advantages.

Here are some considerations for visiting in April or May:

  • Daylight: The sun sets later in spring, usually around 7:45–8:00 pm, giving you more time to sightsee and have dinner before it gets dark.
  • Weather: Spring can be a bit cooler and foggier than fall, with temperatures typically ranging from the mid-50s to mid-60s (°F). Mornings and evenings can feel chilly, so layering is important.
  • Crowds: April and May are generally less crowded than summer months, which makes walking around neighborhoods and visiting popular attractions more comfortable.
  • Events and attractions: Spring is a lively time in San Francisco with events like the Cherry Blossom Festival in April, and you can enjoy parks and gardens in bloom.

Other practical points to keep in mind:

  • San Francisco weather is unpredictable year-round, so even in spring, it’s wise to bring a light rain jacket and layers.
  • Neighborhoods are generally safe to explore during daylight, but as a solo traveler, stick to well-populated areas after dark. Spring’s extended daylight hours help with that.
  • Hotel and flight prices in April-May can be slightly higher than the fall shoulder season, but they are usually lower than peak summer rates.

In summary, April and May are a great option if you prefer later sunsets and slightly fewer crowds. Just be prepared for cooler mornings, potential fog, and always layer your clothing. You’ll still be able to enjoy sightseeing, dining, and walking around safely during daylight hours.
