SFO to Moss landing via H1

How long would I be looking at driving from SFO to moss landings as we are going to go whale watching from there? Then staying in Monterey after.

Really would like to do a ocean view along highway 1

Also where along the way is a good stop? Food etc

The drive from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Moss Landing along Highway 1 is a beautiful coastal journey, perfect for ocean views and scenic stops. The direct drive usually takes around 2.5 to 3 hours without extended stops, but with sightseeing and food breaks, you’ll want to budget 4–5 hours to enjoy it at a relaxed pace.

Here’s a suggested approach for your route:

  • From SFO, head south on US-101 briefly, then transition to CA-1 South toward Pacifica and Half Moon Bay.
  • Follow the coast through Santa Cruz and continue south along Highway 1. This stretch is very scenic, offering classic California coastal views with cliffs, beaches, and surf towns.
  • Continue along Highway 1 until you reach Moss Landing, the departure point for many whale-watching tours.

Recommended stops for food, snacks, or sightseeing along the way:

  • Half Moon Bay: Great for a quick coffee or breakfast. Try a local bakery or café downtown or near the harbor.
  • Santa Cruz: Offers casual dining options along the boardwalk or downtown. Perfect for stretching your legs on the beach or pier.
  • Capitola Village: A charming seaside village with cafes, ice cream shops, and colorful scenery. Good for a short break or snack.
  • Elkhorn Slough near Moss Landing: Scenic marsh area, good for a quick photo stop or spotting wildlife before reaching your whale-watching departure point.

After your whale-watching excursion, Monterey is only about 15–20 minutes south, making it easy to reach your accommodation and enjoy dinner or explore Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, or local shops.

Tips:

  • Allow extra time for traffic, especially on weekends or holidays, as coastal Highway 1 can be busy.
  • Bring snacks or water if you want flexibility with stops and to enjoy the views without rushing.
  • Fuel up in Santa Cruz or Watsonville; gas stations can be sparse along some stretches of Highway 1.

Driving this route offers a perfect combination of ocean views, small coastal towns, and a relaxed pace before your whale-watching adventure.
