Weekend getaway next weekend (2/28) Where to stay?

Hello all,

We are a mid-50's couple from Oregon but we have been renting a home in Dothan AL this year to help with a grandchild with medical issues. It looks like we will be able to get away next weekend for some R&R and don't know where to go in the panhandle. We don't want to drive far, so we were thinking Destin/Okaloosa Island? The only spot we've been to is Rosemary Beach 2 years ago in the summer, so I don't even know if it will be feasible to walk on the beach this time of year but we'd like to stay at a nice place beachfront. Is it too cold? Looking for a nice beach and pool. Thank you! I'm normally a good researcher but I don't have time with the baby right now so I'm turning to you for a little help, no budget really, it's 2 nights)

Heading to the Florida Panhandle for a weekend getaway at the end of February can be a refreshing escape, even though the Gulf waters are still quite cool (average highs in Destin/Okaloosa Island are around 65-70°F). While it may be too chilly for swimming in the ocean, walking on the beach, enjoying the scenery, and relaxing by a heated pool are still very enjoyable. Many beachfront resorts have heated pools and spa amenities, which makes for a comfortable and relaxing stay even in late winter.

Destin and Okaloosa Island are excellent choices for a short getaway. Both offer beautiful white sand beaches, easy access to restaurants and attractions, and a range of beachfront accommodations. You’ll find that mid-week or weekend stays in February are less crowded compared to summer, so you can enjoy a quieter, more peaceful experience.

Here are some recommended areas and resorts to consider for a 2-night stay with beachfront and pool options:

  • Destin Harbor Boardwalk area: Offers upscale condos and resorts with pools and easy access to restaurants and shops. The Boardwalk itself is lovely for evening strolls.
  • Okaloosa Island beachfront resorts: Includes places like the Hilton Sandestin Beach or Henderson Beach Resort. These resorts have heated pools, private beach access, and on-site dining options.
  • Seaside and neighboring communities: While Rosemary Beach was your previous summer spot, Seaside, Alys Beach, or Grayton Beach offer charming accommodations with beach access and pools. Walking on the beach in February is definitely doable with a light jacket.

Additional tips for February beach stays in the Panhandle:

  • Bring layered clothing and a light jacket for the cool ocean breezes.
  • Check with resorts about heated pool availability if you want to swim comfortably.
  • Evening beach walks can be spectacular, with fewer people and beautiful sunsets over the Gulf.
  • Dining options are plentiful in Destin, Sandestin, and Okaloosa, including fresh seafood and casual beachfront spots.

Overall, a late February weekend in Destin or Okaloosa Island is perfect for R&R, scenic beach walks, and enjoying resort amenities. For a couple looking to relax with a nice beach and pool, I’d prioritize resorts with heated pools and private beach access, such as Henderson Beach Resort on Okaloosa Island or a luxury Destin condo near the Harbor Boardwalk. Even if it’s too cold to swim in the Gulf, the beaches are stunning and the ambiance peaceful this time of year.
