Holiday Inn Express near the Convention Center-safe area?

Hi all. I booked Holiday Inn Express near the Convention Center for a trip in May. We were interested in a hotel close to the Mall with a fridge / microwave. IHG members. Now I'm seeing some concerning info about safety in the area, most of which is quite old. Not sure if the cautions about the area around New York Avenue are still vadid. Should I consider cancelling and rebooking the Holiday Inn near Dupont Circle? I feel like that area is certainly safe (or it was when I lived on the same street for a summer 20 years ago).

...we are a boring older couple, live in a large-ish small city (>150K population). We're reasonably well-traveled. But my husband won't enjoy walking through the equivalent to San Francisco's Tenderloin to get to our hotel.

Thank you very much for your advice!

The area around the Convention Center, including New York Avenue, has seen improvements over the years, but like many urban areas, it still has spots where you should exercise standard city precautions, especially after dark. Many travelers stay there without incident, but it is not quite as polished or bustling as Dupont Circle.

Here are some considerations for your decision:

  • The Holiday Inn Express near the Convention Center is convenient for accessing the Mall and museums, but the walk to and from attractions, especially in the evening, might feel less comfortable than areas like Dupont Circle.
  • Dupont Circle offers a more residential, tree-lined feel, with a wide choice of restaurants and nightlife. The area is generally regarded as very safe, with more foot traffic at night and a lively, active neighborhood atmosphere.
  • Public transportation and rideshare options in both areas are reliable. If you plan to walk in the evenings, Dupont Circle provides a more enjoyable and secure experience.

Additional points:

  • If your primary concern is comfort and safety when walking at night, especially since you mentioned your husband’s preferences, Dupont Circle is the safer and more appealing choice.
  • If proximity to the Mall and museums during the day is a higher priority, the Convention Center hotel is convenient, but consider taking rideshares in the evening rather than walking alone.
  • Both areas have hotels that meet your requirements for fridge/microwave and IHG membership benefits, so either location can work depending on your priorities for evening safety versus daytime convenience.

In conclusion, if your priority is feeling safe and comfortable in the evenings while enjoying a pleasant neighborhood, rebooking in Dupont Circle is advisable. If you value daytime convenience to the National Mall and are okay with taking a short ride at night, the Convention Center hotel is reasonable.
