citizenM Washington DC Capitol 550 School Street Southwest,
Apologies if this question has been asked before.
We are visiting Washington DC in March from Ireland. We have stayed in CitizenM hotels in other cities and have enjoyed them.
I'm wondering about the area? I see Northwest, Penn, Dupont Circle areas recommended. Is the particular area where CitizenM is located suitable for tourists?
As we have not visited Washington DC before any pointers in relation to Southwest area will be gratefully received.
Thank you.
The CitizenM Washington DC Capitol is located at 550 School Street SW, in the Southwest neighborhood of DC. This area is often considered more business-oriented and quieter compared to neighborhoods like Dupont Circle, Penn Quarter, or Northwest. For a first-time visitor, it’s important to understand both the advantages and considerations of staying here.
Pros of staying at CitizenM Capitol/Southwest DC:
- Proximity to major landmarks: The Southwest neighborhood is very close to the National Mall, the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian museums, and the Jefferson Memorial. Many key attractions are within a 15–25 minute walk or a short Metro ride.
- Modern hotel amenities: CitizenM is known for its comfortable, tech-forward rooms, which is ideal for travelers who enjoy efficiency and style.
- Less touristy and crowded: The area tends to be quieter than the more central downtown or Dupont Circle areas, which can make for a more relaxed stay.
Considerations:
- Limited dining options nearby: Southwest DC doesn’t have as many restaurants, cafes, or nightlife options within walking distance. Most dining options will require a short walk or Metro/ride-share ride to Penn Quarter or other districts.
- Fewer shops and entertainment: If you enjoy being in a lively neighborhood with boutique shops or casual strolls, this area is less vibrant.
- Transportation: While it is walkable to major sites, you’ll rely on Metro, buses, or ride-share for dining and exploring other neighborhoods. The L’Enfant Plaza Metro station is nearby and provides convenient access to the wider city.
Neighborhood tips:
- Use the nearby Metro stations for easy access to other areas such as Dupont Circle, Georgetown (via bus or ride-share), and the Penn Quarter for restaurants and evening activities.
- Walking along the National Mall is highly recommended as it connects you directly to monuments, memorials, and museums.
- If you plan to explore the city extensively, consider planning a few trips into other neighborhoods for meals and casual sightseeing.
Overall, staying at CitizenM Capitol in Southwest DC is suitable for tourists, especially first-time visitors focused on the National Mall and Capitol area. It offers convenience for major attractions and a modern hotel experience, though you should be prepared to venture a bit further for varied dining and nightlife.
