Should we stay somewhere else for a night?

Hello! My husband and I will be staying at the Ritz for a long weekend, but it wasn’t available the first night we arrive. We are wondering if we should spend the night before somewhere else, maybe another city/beach town? We arrive in the evening on a Thursday and won’t check in to the Ritz until Friday - Monday. We’ve never been to this part of Florida, so open to suggestions! We can rent a car or just uber, we are open to any ideas. Thank you!

It’s great that you're planning a long weekend at the Ritz on Amelia Island! Since you won’t be able to check in for the first night, it’s definitely worth considering spending that night somewhere else. There are several charming cities and beach towns in the surrounding area that could make for a relaxing stop before you settle into the Ritz. Here are a few suggestions for places to visit that are easily accessible by car or Uber:

  • Fernandina Beach (on Amelia Island) - If you’re set on staying close to Amelia Island but just want a change of scenery, Fernandina Beach is the charming town right next to the Ritz. It’s full of history, cute shops, and great restaurants. You can easily spend the night here and take in the local sights, such as the historic district, the marina, and the nearby beaches. It’s only a short drive from the Ritz, so it’s a convenient option.
  • St. Augustine - About an hour and 20 minutes south of Amelia Island, St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States and a perfect place for a night’s stay. It’s full of history, stunning Spanish colonial architecture, and beautiful waterfront views. You can visit iconic landmarks like the Castillo de San Marcos or take a stroll along St. George Street for quaint shops and restaurants. It’s a fantastic spot if you’re interested in exploring history, and the town has a variety of charming hotels and inns.
  • Jacksonville Beach - If you prefer to be closer to a bigger city, Jacksonville Beach is about 45 minutes south of Amelia Island. It’s a vibrant beach town with a laid-back vibe, plenty of dining and entertainment options, and a beautiful beach. You can stay in a beachfront hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening before heading to Amelia Island. Jacksonville itself is a larger city with a more urban feel, so if you want a change from the island’s slower pace, Jacksonville Beach is a great option.
  • Atlantic Beach - Just a bit north of Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach offers a quieter beach experience with a more relaxed vibe. It's about a 50-minute drive south of Amelia Island and is known for its local surf culture and small-town charm. The area has a number of boutique hotels and cozy accommodations, and it's a perfect spot for a peaceful evening before heading to Amelia Island.
  • Historic Savannah, Georgia - If you’re up for a longer drive (about 2 hours and 30 minutes), Savannah is an absolutely beautiful city that’s worth the detour. Known for its moss-draped oak trees, historic squares, and Southern charm, Savannah offers a mix of history, art, and great food. It’s an excellent choice if you want to experience a bit of old-world charm before heading to your luxurious stay at the Ritz. While a bit farther out, it’s a fantastic city to explore for a night.

If you want to stick with a quiet, beachy vibe and not travel too far, Fernandina Beach or Jacksonville Beach would be the easiest and quickest options. However, if you’re looking for a little more exploration and history, St. Augustine or Savannah could be great choices. Each offers a different experience depending on whether you prefer beach relaxation or a mix of history and culture.

Enjoy your trip, and have a fantastic stay at the Ritz!
