First Roaring Camp steam engine then Santa Cruz

Coming from Carmel, my son and I are taking my 93 year old dad on the steam engine ride through the redwoods at Roaring Camp. Then I thought we would go to Santa Cruz . We have a handicap placard for our rental car. I thought it would be nice to see the boardwalk and then have lunch in Santa Cruz. We aren't from California but it seems like Santa Cruz would be a nice place to stop. Can anyone recommend a good place to park and also a nice place for lunch- maybe with a view- that doesn't have steps? Dad does not enjoy Mexican but anything else is good and no particular price limits. Thanks!

Santa Cruz is a wonderful spot to stop after the Roaring Camp steam engine ride, especially with a 93-year-old parent. The Boardwalk area is iconic, and there are accessible parking and dining options to make your visit comfortable.

For parking with a handicap placard, consider the following options:

  • Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Parking Lot – There are designated handicap spaces close to the main entrance, which is very convenient for accessing the boardwalk and nearby restaurants.
  • Pacific Avenue Parking Garages – Downtown Santa Cruz has several city-run parking garages with handicap-accessible spaces. This is a good option if you prefer to explore the downtown area briefly before lunch.
  • Metered street parking – Many streets near the Boardwalk and along the waterfront have accessible spots, but these can be limited, so arrive a bit early.

For lunch with a view and easy accessibility, here are some great choices:

  • The Crow’s Nest – Located at the harbor, this restaurant offers seafood, American fare, and panoramic views of the ocean. It has accessible entrances and seating without steps.
  • Shadowbrook – Slightly uphill but accessible via a funicular (which eliminates steps), Shadowbrook is known for its beautiful setting along the river, excellent service, and varied menu including seafood and steak.
  • Harbor Café – Casual and located near the marina, it has ocean views, simple accessible seating, and a menu with sandwiches, salads, and seafood options.

Additional tips:

  • Plan to arrive a little before typical lunch hours to secure parking and avoid crowds, especially on weekends.
  • The Boardwalk itself has ramps and accessible paths, so your dad should be able to enjoy a short stroll along the boardwalk without too much difficulty.
  • After lunch, consider a gentle walk along the promenade or enjoy some of the accessible areas of the boardwalk before heading back to your car.

This plan allows you to enjoy both the natural beauty of Roaring Camp and the lively, scenic atmosphere of Santa Cruz without worrying about steps or long walks for your dad.
