A day at Shaolin Temple and Songshan

Hi all:

Am intending to do a day trip to Shaolin temple, which includes visiting from Zhengzhou, visiting the Shaolin temple and premises, then taking the Cableway to Sanhuangzhai.

From there I wanna hike all the way to Sanhuangzhai ticket office, then find a way to get to 嵩岳寺塔 (Songyue Pagoda) and then 嵩阳书院 (Songyang Academy), Zhongyue Temple then back to Zhengzhou.

Is this feasible all in a day? Want to find out if there is public transport I can take along the route from the ticket office to visit the other sites.

Attempting to visit Shaolin Temple, Sanhuangzhai, Songyue Pagoda, Songyang Academy, and Zhongyue Temple all in a single day from Zhengzhou is technically possible but will be extremely rushed and physically demanding. These sites are spread out across the Songshan area, and travel times—especially if relying on public transportation—can add up quickly.

Shaolin Temple and Sanhuangzhai:

  • From Zhengzhou, take a high-speed train or long-distance bus to Dengfeng (about 1–1.5 hours by train or 2 hours by bus).
  • Visit Shaolin Temple first; a typical visit takes 1.5–2 hours to see the temple, pagoda forest, and maybe a Kung Fu performance.
  • Take the cableway to Sanhuangzhai. Hiking from the top of the cableway down to the Sanhuangzhai ticket office can take 1–2 hours depending on pace.

Transportation to other sites:

  • From Sanhuangzhai, public transport options to Songyue Pagoda and Songyang Academy are limited. Local buses exist but have infrequent schedules, and routes may require transfers in Dengfeng town.
  • Taxis or ride-hailing apps (like Didi) are more practical for moving between these attractions quickly, but costs will be higher.
  • Zhongyue Temple is near Dengfeng; getting there from Songyang Academy or Songyue Pagoda would also likely require a taxi due to limited public transit connectivity.

Feasibility:

  • With strict planning and private transport (taxi or rented car), it is possible to visit Shaolin Temple, Sanhuangzhai, Songyue Pagoda, and Songyang Academy in one day, but it will be very tight.
  • Using only public transport will make it extremely difficult to complete all sites in a single day.
  • Consider prioritizing Shaolin Temple and Sanhuangzhai for one day and leaving Songyue Pagoda, Songyang Academy, and Zhongyue Temple for another day if possible.

Hotel/Timing Tips:

  • Start early, ideally by 7–8 AM from Zhengzhou.
  • Book tickets for cableway and any attractions in advance to save time.
  • If using taxis, negotiate a full-day rate or use a local guide service for smoother logistics.

In summary, while technically feasible with private transport and a fast pace, doing all these attractions in one day using only public transport is not recommended. Prioritizing key sites or splitting the trip over two days will make for a much more enjoyable experience.
