Waihou trail

Has anyone done this hike, some reviews say it’s easy except if you hike down to the spring other reviews have said it’s challenging overall. We are average fitness level people that walk regularly here and at home but aren’t ‘hikers’ per se. Also read some of the Forest may have been damaged with the ‘23 fire, anyone been there since then. Thanks in advance for any advice

The Waihou Trail on Maui is a moderately challenging hike depending on how far you choose to go. Many visitors find the main trail relatively easy for those who are generally active, as it is well-marked and maintained. The path offers beautiful scenery, including lush forests and occasional streams, making it a rewarding walk for average fitness hikers.

However, if you choose to hike down to the spring, this section is considered more difficult. It involves steeper terrain, uneven footing, and some slippery areas, so it can be challenging for those who do not hike regularly. Hikers are advised to wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water, and allow extra time for this portion of the trail.

Regarding the 2023 fire, some areas of the forest along the Waihou Trail were affected. Visitors report that while certain sections show signs of fire damage, much of the trail remains green and walkable. The burned areas may have less canopy cover, so sun protection and caution on exposed terrain are recommended.

  • The main Waihou Trail is suitable for average fitness level hikers.
  • Hiking down to the spring is more challenging and requires care.
  • Fire-affected areas may have less vegetation and sun exposure.

Additional tips for visiting the Waihou Trail include bringing insect repellent, checking weather conditions, and starting early in the day to avoid the hottest part of the afternoon. Many hikers also suggest taking a camera, as the trail offers scenic views and unique flora.

  • Wear sturdy footwear and bring water.
  • Start early to avoid midday heat.
  • Be cautious in fire-affected sections with exposed terrain.

Overall, for average walkers who are active but not regular hikers, the Waihou Trail is accessible and enjoyable, especially if you stick to the main trail. Venturing to the spring adds adventure and challenge but is manageable with care and preparation.
