Bus and luggages

Hello,

I am going on a solo trip in China next october.

At some point of the trip, I will have to take some "short distance" bus rides.

I will carry a small backpack and a medium size suitcase.

Will I have a problem bringing them on the buses?

Here are the route:

Zhangjiajie to Wulingyuan

Yangshuo to Xingping

Hello,

Traveling by short-distance buses in China with a small backpack and a medium-sized suitcase is generally manageable, but there are a few practical considerations to keep in mind:

For most short-distance buses, especially intercity and tourist buses in areas like Zhangjiajie/Wulingyuan and Yangshuo/Xingping, there is usually space for luggage. Buses often have:

  • A luggage compartment under the bus for medium to large suitcases. You can check your medium-sized suitcase here when boarding.
  • Overhead racks inside the bus for smaller backpacks and carry-on items.
  • Occasionally, for very small local buses, space can be tight and large suitcases may need to be folded or held on your lap, but for tourist-oriented buses the luggage compartments are sufficient.

Here are some tips to make your bus travel smoother:

  • Arrive at the bus station a bit early to ensure space in the luggage compartment and avoid last-minute issues.
  • Label your suitcase and keep valuables in your backpack, as the under-bus luggage area is less supervised.
  • For very short routes like Yangshuo to Xingping (around 30 minutes), some small minibuses may not have a luggage compartment, so try to keep your medium suitcase compact or use the local taxi/transfer if needed.
  • Ask at the ticket counter if there are luggage restrictions when buying tickets; most bus staff are used to tourists and can advise.

In summary, carrying a small backpack and a medium suitcase should not be a problem on buses for your specified routes, especially if you use standard intercity or tourist buses. Smaller local buses may require flexibility, but for your travel plans, it should be fine.
