Hotel for conference
Hello all. I'm going to a conference at the Moscone Center in August. There are affiliated hotels where I can get a discounted rate ($270-$300) and would love some feedback on which of these would be best to stay. I'm in my late 40's and I like to go out but nothing crazy.
- InterContinental San Francisco
- San Francisco Marriott Marquis
- San Francisco Marriott Union Square
- JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square
- The Westin St. Francis on Union Square
- The Clancy, Autograph Collection
For a conference at the Moscone Center in August, all of the hotels you listed are excellent choices with varying pros and cons depending on your priorities such as proximity, amenities, and ambiance.
In general, being close to Moscone Center is convenient for walking to sessions and avoiding traffic. Here’s a breakdown of your options:
- InterContinental San Francisco
- Very close to Moscone Center (about 2-3 blocks).

- High-rise hotel with contemporary rooms and amenities.
- Large hotel, can feel busy and corporate.
- Access to restaurants and bars within walking distance.
- San Francisco Marriott Union Square
- A bit further (about 10-15 minute walk) from Moscone, still very reasonable.
- Located near Union Square, giving easy access to shops, cafes, and nightlife.
- Rooms are comfortable, modern, but not as new or sleek as InterContinental.
- JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square
- Similar to Marriott Union Square, about 10-15 minute walk to Moscone.
- Upscale accommodations with elegant interiors.
- Good restaurants and bars onsite and nearby.
- The Westin St. Francis on Union Square
- Historic hotel with classic charm and central location at Union Square.
- Walking distance to Moscone (15 min) and excellent shopping and dining options.
- Some rooms may feel dated, but the experience is quintessential San Francisco.
- The Clancy, Autograph Collection
- Smaller boutique-style hotel, about a 10-minute walk to Moscone Center.
- Modern, boutique atmosphere with a focus on comfort and personalized service.
- Less busy than the large chains, quieter experience.
Recommendations based on your preferences:
- If you want absolute convenience to the conference: Marriott Marquis or InterContinental.
- If you want a combination of city experience, walking distance to shops, and pleasant local dining: JW Marriott Union Square, Marriott Union Square, or The Clancy.
- If you enjoy historic ambiance and don’t mind a slightly longer walk: Westin St. Francis.
Summary: For a professional yet enjoyable stay with easy access to Moscone Center and local dining/shopping, the InterContinental San Francisco or JW Marriott Union Square offer the best balance of convenience, comfort, and amenities for a traveler in their late 40s who likes to go out but not party excessively.
