April-Poipu

Hi Kauai Lovers! We are bringing our young granddaughter to Kauai and staying at Poipu Sands in April. I remember that the South Shore waves are bigger in summer and less active in winter. Opposite for the North Shore. What is Poipu like in April? Will it be okay for young swimmers with life jackets?

Thank you for any help and insight.

Poipu on Kauai’s South Shore is generally considered one of the safest and most family-friendly areas for swimming, especially for young children. In April, the South Shore is transitioning from the calmer winter months into slightly more active surf, but it is typically much gentler than the North Shore, which is famous for big winter waves.

For young swimmers with life jackets, Poipu offers several protected areas with relatively calm water:

  • Poipu Beach Park has a natural rock formation that creates a protected swimming area perfect for children. The water is usually calm and clear, ideal for snorkeling and wading.
  • Baby Beach, adjacent to Poipu Beach, is shallow and sheltered, providing extra safety for toddlers and young kids wearing life jackets.
  • Other smaller coves along the South Shore may also have calmer waters suitable for supervised play, but conditions can vary day to day depending on swell and wind.

Safety tips and considerations:

  • Always supervise children closely, even in calm water.
  • Check daily surf reports and ask locals or lifeguards about current conditions before entering the water.
  • Even in gentle conditions, life jackets are highly recommended for young or inexperienced swimmers.

Overall, April is a good month for family swimming at Poipu. The waves are typically moderate, water temperatures are comfortable, and the beaches are equipped for safe and enjoyable experiences for kids.
