Could it be the WORST airport?
Recently starting traveling quite regularly in and out of Southwest Florida International Airport. It's hard to wrap my head around how absolutely God awful that place is. Small, generally dirty, tragically limited services.
It kind of boggles the mind that with the meteoric growth the region has experienced over the past thirty years, that the airport has been so slow to respond.
I see there is evidently an expansion plan underway, but I am at a loss to see when they actually work on it. Construction visible outside the terminal seems to have made zero progress in recent months.
How did it get this bad?
Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers has indeed faced criticism over the years for feeling cramped and under-equipped given the rapid population and tourism growth in the region. The issues you’re noticing stem from a combination of factors.
First, the airport was originally designed to handle far fewer passengers than it sees today. Regarding expansion, RSW has a multi-phase improvement plan that has been in the works for several years. The project includes:

- Additional gates and improved security screening areas to reduce congestion during peak times.
- Upgraded parking, roadways, and support infrastructure to handle higher traffic.
- Enhanced retail and dining spaces to provide better passenger experience.
Delays in visible progress are often due to the complexities of airport construction, funding allocation, and regulatory approvals.
