Memorial Day Weekend

Too late, in my haste to book accommodation, I realise I have booked to arrive Monday of the Memorial Day weekend. How horrendous will the lines (by car) be to get into the Valley?

Hopefully most traffic will be going the other way, but how much extra time should I factor in?

thanks

Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest times of year in Yosemite, so arriving on the Monday of the holiday weekend does mean you will likely encounter heavier traffic than normal. The bulk of traffic usually heads into the park on Friday and Saturday, but Monday is still part of the holiday weekend and can be busy, especially in the morning.

Entering Yosemite Valley by car typically involves going through the Arch Rock Entrance if coming from the south (Highway 41) or the Big Oak Flat Entrance from the west (Highway 120). Expect possible slowdowns near the entrance stations and in the Valley itself as cars search for parking.

Here are some factors and tips to consider:

  • Traffic volume: Lines at the park entrances on Monday morning can be 20–45 minutes long depending on arrival time. Later in the morning, 10 a.m.–noon, traffic is usually still moderate but parking may be more limited.
  • Time of day: Arriving early, before 8 a.m., is generally the best strategy to avoid long waits and secure parking in Yosemite Valley.
  • Parking constraints: Even if you get through the entrance quickly, parking in popular spots like Yosemite Village, Curry Village, or trailheads can fill up quickly. Consider having a backup plan for parking or using the free Valley Shuttle once inside.
  • Alternate entrances/routes: Depending on where you are coming from, choosing the Big Oak Flat or Arch Rock entrance may save some time compared to the more popular South Entrance.
  • Expect delays: Factor in an extra 30–60 minutes for entrance and valley travel compared to non-holiday periods.

Overall, while not as congested as Friday or Saturday, Monday Memorial Day traffic can still slow you down. Planning for an early arrival and being flexible about where you park and what you do first will help make the experience less stressful.
