Looks Boards - Boogie Board with View Window
Hi!
We are heading back to Maui in June (YAY!!)
Our kids will be 7 and 8 are not quite up for snorkeling in a mask so we want to get them Looky boards. I haven't rented them before, and see that Snorkel Bobs has them but you can't reserve them. Has anyone rented them on the island? Do you have any recommendations? I can't seem to find them at any other snorkel rental places (we typically rent from The Snorkel Store).
I'd appreciate any feedback! Thank you!
Looky boards (boogie boards with a view window) are a fantastic way to introduce kids to underwater observation without requiring them to wear masks or snorkels. Maui has a few options for renting these, though availability can be limited, especially in peak season like June.
Rental Tips and Options
- Snorkel Bob's: As you noted, they carry Looky boards, but reservations are not available. It's best to arrive early in the day, especially during summer, to ensure availability. Weekdays may be slightly less busy than weekends.
- The Snorkel Store: Typically stocks traditional snorkeling gear, fins, and masks. While they may not have Looky boards routinely, it's worth calling ahead to see if they can special order or have any on hand during your visit.
- Local Surf Shops: Shops like Maui Surfboards & More (Kihei) and Surfboards Hawaii (Lahaina/Wailea) sometimes rent Looky boards or can point you to stores that do. Calling ahead is recommended as inventory varies by location and season.
- Resort Rentals: Some larger resorts in Kihei, Wailea, and Lahaina offer water gear rentals on-site. Check if the Sheraton Maui or Westin Ka'anapali Beach Hotel have Looky boards available for guest rentals or daily use.
Additional Advice
- Bring water shoes or reef-safe footwear for kids — many good snorkeling areas are rocky near shore.
- Consider timing your boogie board/snorkel sessions in the morning when water is calmer.
- If you can’t secure rentals, a portable option is to purchase inexpensive view window boards online ahead of time and bring them with you.
Overall, Snorkel Bob’s is your most reliable on-island rental for Looky boards, but arriving early is key since they cannot be reserved. Calling local surf shops or resorts a few days in advance may also yield availability. Your kids will likely love the combination of boogie boarding and seeing the underwater world through the view window!
