swim WITH the manatees, any place better than the other?

Hi1 There seem to be a few different places for swimming with the manatees. They all look fairly similar in experience and price. anyone have any thoughts on which is better, for whatever reason? thanks so much. We'll be taking the drive from Dunedin so closer might be better but don't mind the drive for a better adventure.

Great — you’ll be based at Collier (Land O’ Lakes) with a few hours between games, and there are plenty of nearby spots where you can grab food, stretch your legs, and get a little taste of the area without heading all the way into downtown Tampa. Below I list quick options grouped by type (close-to-field convenience, a short drive for shopping/dining, kid-friendly outdoors/farms, and places to relax/eat). I’ve also noted roughly how long each is from the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex so you can pick what fits your time window.

Quick note: Collier Parkway / the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex is right where most youth tournaments take place, so you’ll have easy access to fast casual restaurants and parks nearby. If you want more variety, a short drive to The Shops at Wiregrass or Tampa Premium Outlets expands your choices a lot. (Collier complex address for reference: 3032 Collier Pkwy, Land O’ Lakes.)

Close & convenient (5–10 minutes) — eat, relax, people-watch

  • Local restaurants and quick bites along Collier Pkwy / SR-54 — basic chains and local spots (pizza, grills, diners) are clustered near the rec complex so you can get in-and-out meals between games. If you want sit-down with local flavor, look for places like Stonewater Grill and other nearby restaurants along SR-54 / Collier Pkwy.
  • Land O’ Lakes Rec Complex campus — there’s usually outdoor seating areas, a playground and indoor rec space (helpful if kids need to burn extra energy). Great if you want to relax on-site and avoid driving.

Short drive (10–20 minutes) — best for variety, local crowd, playgrounds & family-friendly dining

  • The Shops at Wiregrass (Wesley Chapel) — open-air shopping & dining village with lots of casual restaurants, coffee shops, a playground/green space, and sometimes live music or events. It’s a very easy place to wander, grab food, and let kids play while you sit and relax. Expect 10–20 minutes depending on traffic. Great choice if you want local restaurants and a walkable spot.
  • Wesley Chapel / SR-56 dining strip — just off I-75 you’ll find chains and local restaurants (Bonefish, Bahama Breeze, BJ’s and others) — useful if you want a consistent menu and a lively mid-week crowd. These cluster around the Shops/Wesley Chapel area.

Kid-friendly / outdoor options (15–25 minutes) — good if your group needs activities

  • Old McMicky’s Farm — a hands-on small farm experience with animals and kid activities (seasonal hours — check before you go). It’s a nice low-key activity if you want to get off screens and let younger kids interact with animals.
  • Local playgrounds and small parks — Land O’ Lakes and nearby neighborhoods have several neighborhood parks and playgrounds where kids can run off extra energy during long tournament days (the rec complex itself often has nearby play areas).

Shopping / more entertainment (20–30 minutes) — if you want a longer break

  • Tampa Premium Outlets / outlet malls — if people want to shop or grab a quick bite, outlets are an option and are commonly recommended by visitors in that area. (Good if you want to split up — parents can snack/shop while kids rest.)
  • Indoor entertainment options — the wider Wesley Chapel / New Tampa area has trampoline parks, family entertainment centers, and escape rooms if you want an active, indoor option — useful when weather is hot or stormy. (Search for “trampoline park” or “family fun center” near Wesley Chapel for the nearest open option.)

Practical tips to make the most of the time between games

  • Bring folding chairs, shade or a pop-up tent — it can be hot and the rec complex is mostly open fields.
  • Pack snacks and refillable water bottles; concession lines at tournaments can be long.
  • If you want a relaxed sit-down meal, aim for Wiregrass or the SR-54/SR-56 corridor — you’ll find more family-friendly dining with indoor seating and shorter waits than beach-area destinations.
  • Use the time to explore a single nearby spot (Wiregrass) rather than trying to “see Tampa” — downtown Tampa is 30–45+ minutes away and better saved for a separate trip when you have more time.

Bottom line: for a quick, low-stress way to kill time — stay local at the Land O’ Lakes Rec Complex or grab a nearby casual restaurant. If you want a short drive for more variety, head to The Shops at Wiregrass (food, shops, kid play space) or the Wesley Chapel dining strip — both give you lots of options without losing much time between games. For a family outing with kids, Old McMicky’s Farm is a nice, different break from the fields.

If you want, tell me how long your breaks are (30 min, 2–3 hours, etc.) and I’ll pick a single, timed plan so you don’t waste travel time — otherwise the above gives a range of solid options to match your schedule.
