First timers

While we are experienced travelers we have never been to this area. We arrive September 13 and depart on the 20th. I know it’s a beautiful area and we have been to Colorado before. We will have a car so getting out and about is great. Are there any casual restaurants there? We have the cash but not really looking for fine dining. It can be Beaver Creek , Vail or anywhere in between. Also any ideas for day trips. Thanks everyone in advance for your help. We are staying at the Residences of Bachelor Gulch.

Beaver Creek and the surrounding Vail Valley are stunning in mid-September, with fewer crowds than the summer peak, making it a perfect time for a first visit. With a car, you have flexibility to explore both casual dining and scenic day trips.

For casual dining, there are plenty of options in Beaver Creek and nearby Vail that offer relaxed atmospheres and high-quality meals without venturing into fine dining territory.

  • Beaver Creek Village: You’ll find several casual spots such as Blue Moose Pizza, which is popular for families and large groups, and Grouse Mountain Grill for American comfort food.
  • Vail Village: Just a short drive away, try Sweet Basil Express for quick lunches or Big Bear Bistro for sandwiches and casual fare. For something cozy, The Little Diner is well-loved for breakfast and brunch.
  • Between Vail and Beaver Creek: Along the highway and in Avon, you’ll find casual eateries like The Red Lion or Coyote Cafe offering laid-back dining with local flavor.

For day trips, the area is rich in scenic drives and outdoor experiences:

  • Gore Range & Minturn: Beautiful drives and hiking trails with fewer tourists, plus charming small towns.
  • Glenwood Springs: About 1.5-2 hours from Beaver Creek, you can enjoy the hot springs or explore Hanging Lake trail if you’re up for a moderate hike.
  • Vail Pass and Red Cliff: Scenic drives with pull-offs for photos, short hikes, and impressive vistas.
  • Dotsero & Eagle River: Fishing, kayaking, or just a relaxing afternoon by the water for a low-key day trip.

Other activities to consider without leaving the valley too far:

  • Take the Beaver Creek Village gondola for panoramic mountain views.
  • Visit Betty Ford Alpine Gardens in Vail, a casual and beautiful spot for a short walk.
  • Explore local shops and art galleries in Vail Village for a relaxing afternoon.

Since you’re staying at the Residences of Bachelor Gulch, everything is conveniently located for a mix of short drives and village strolls. Mid-September tends to be quiet and ideal for enjoying the natural beauty, hiking, and casual local dining without the summer crowds.
