rental vehicle

We will be coming up from Boston on the train. Staying in Wells for a wk and flying out of Portland.

I don't see much in the way of rental vehicles in the area. Would appreciate advice.

It sounds like you're planning a lovely trip to Wells, Maine! Since you're arriving by train from Boston and flying out of Portland, securing a rental car can be a bit tricky, as Wells doesn’t have many rental car locations directly in the town. However, there are a few options you can consider:

1. Rental Car in Portland: The closest major city with more rental car options is Portland, which is only about a 40-minute drive from Wells. Portland International Jetport (PWM) has several rental agencies like Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, and Budget. You could either take a bus or taxi from Wells to Portland to pick up a car, or if you plan on taking a train into Portland, you can grab a car directly from the airport.

2. Wells Car Rental Agencies: There are a few small local agencies in Wells, though the selection may be limited. You could check with:

  • Ogunquit Rental Cars: Located in nearby Ogunquit, they offer seasonal car rentals.
  • Enterprise Rent-A-Car: They have a location in Wells, but you might need to confirm availability as it can vary based on season.
These smaller agencies might offer more flexibility, especially for a short-term rental during peak travel times.

3. Train Station and Bus Rental Options: If you're arriving at Wells Station via train, you might need to take a bus or taxi to pick up a car rental in a nearby town. For example, the Amtrak train station in Wells is a good 15-minute drive from some of the local car rental agencies in Wells or Ogunquit. You can use a local taxi or rideshare service to bridge the gap.

4. Ridesharing as an Alternative: If renting a car proves difficult or if you’re planning to explore a small area around Wells, you could rely on ridesharing apps like Uber or Lyft for short trips, especially to Portland or nearby coastal towns. For getting around town and making the most of the local area, this can be a convenient option without worrying about parking or driving.

5. Consider Renting a Car for the Portland to Wells Segment: If you plan to only stay in Wells for a few days, another option is to rent the car just for your drive between Portland and Wells. You could take the train or bus to Portland, pick up a car, and then drop it off at the Portland airport when you're ready to fly out.

In Summary: Wells may have limited options, but Portland is your best bet for a wider selection of rental cars. Consider renting in Portland and then driving to Wells, or check smaller agencies in the area. If you’re just doing short trips, ridesharing may also be a good alternative.
