Travel to San Clemente 4/20-4/27/2025

We are staying at the San Clemente inn through RCI. I am a little nervous because reviews seem to be either "this is the best place ever" to "this place is a dump."

It will be 4 adults in a one bedroom with the murphy beds for my son and his girlfriend.

I know for sure we will be going to Catalina Island. I'd like to see the Mission. We were going to drive down one day to San Diego Zoo. (it says that it takes an hour - but my sister said it will take longer).

Any restaurant recommendations? Or places we have to see? I am not in the best health so can't go hiking.

Would love any tips anyone can provide. Thank you!

San Clemente is a charming coastal town in Orange County with a laid-back vibe, Spanish-style architecture, and a beautiful pier. Staying at the San Clemente Inn through RCI can be a good choice if you’re mainly looking for a convenient location near the beach and downtown. Reviews may vary because some guests expect luxury resort-level accommodations, while others appreciate the basic charm and location. Since you’re in a one-bedroom with murphy beds, it should work fine for your group.

For your itinerary and sightseeing:

  • Catalina Island: Definitely a highlight. The ferry from Dana Point or Long Beach is easy, and the town of Avalon is very walkable. You can enjoy the waterfront, shops, and maybe a glass-bottom boat tour. No strenuous hiking required if you stick to the town area.
  • San Clemente Mission: Mission San Clemente de la Playa is a small, beautiful historic mission with gardens and a visitor center. It’s an easy visit with minimal walking.
  • San Diego Zoo day trip: The drive is more likely 1.5–2 hours one-way depending on traffic, especially during morning or evening rush hours. Plan to leave early and consider returning in the evening to avoid peak traffic. You may want to pack snacks and plan a relaxed day around the zoo.

Other attractions nearby:

  • San Clemente Pier and Beachwalk – easy strolls and great views.
  • Downtown San Clemente – shopping, cafes, and ice cream shops.
  • Nearby Dana Point Harbor – whale watching tours are seasonal, and a pleasant harbor walk.
  • Relaxing at the beach or sitting at oceanfront cafes is a nice, low-energy activity.

Restaurant recommendations:

  • Nick’s San Clemente: Upscale American cuisine, nice atmosphere.
  • Fisherman’s Restaurant & Bar: Seafood and ocean views near the pier.
  • C’est La Vie: Casual French café, good breakfast and lunch options.
  • South of Nick’s: Mexican cuisine with fresh ingredients, walkable from downtown.
  • Hola! Café & Creperie: Casual breakfast/brunch spot with ocean views.

Tips for your stay:

  • Consider booking activities like Catalina Island ferry tickets in advance, especially for spring break or weekends.
  • Traffic in Southern California can be unpredictable. Plan extra travel time for any day trips.
  • For low-energy sightseeing, focus on beach walks, piers, and historic sites in San Clemente rather than long excursions.
  • If possible, have a rental car for flexibility, especially for the San Diego day trip or trips to nearby towns like Dana Point or Laguna Beach.

Overall, prioritize easy, scenic activities and local dining, and use day trips for highlights like Catalina Island and the zoo. This should give a balanced and enjoyable week without too much strain on health or energy levels.
