Friend and I will be returning back from Canada and crossing via the Bridge to Detroit or through Port Huron. I have Global Entry, but my friend doesn't. Will the Nexus card I got with Global Entry will work for us both to go through the Nexus lane with our rental car when we cross back over or if we'll have to go through the regular line due to her not having Global Entry?
Thanks
It's great that you have Global Entry, and it's understandable that you're wondering how it works when crossing back into the U.S. from Canada with your friend who doesn't have Global Entry.
To answer your question: the Nexus lane is primarily designated for travelers who are enrolled in the Nexus program, which is designed for expedited border crossing between the U.S. and Canada. While Global Entry members can use Global Entry kiosks for entry into the U.S. from certain international locations, the Nexus card itself is specific to Nexus members.
As for the rental car, the process will remain the same — you would both have to go through separate lanes, and you would use the Nexus lane with your Nexus card while your friend uses the regular lane. Just make sure you have your Nexus card handy and ready to show at the crossing point.
If you're looking for a faster process, your friend might want to consider applying for Global Entry or Nexus in the future. Nexus, in particular, is a good option for frequent travelers between the U.S. and Canada as it offers expedited processing at both airports and land crossings.
Safe travels, and enjoy your trip!
