I've read all the forums and now most likely I just have myself all confused by too much info! I need help deciding where to stay in September for 9-10 days. Here's some info on me and my husband:
We are in our mid to late 50s, active and in reasonable shape. We like to hike (no hard trails) and recreational biking but also love to relax by the pool and beach. We are big bourbon drinkers and love a good cocktail in the evening as well as some nice meals out. Also love trying local foods/specialties, etc. This will be our second island to visit in Hawaii (traveled to Oahu several years ago). We are open to a resort or condo, but must have A/C. Would love to be right on a beach or within walking distance to a nice one. Also, looking to go on Napali boat tour. We are renting a car for sightseeing so that's not an issue. Please help me decide whether north shore or south shore would suit our needs better and if you have a recommendation for a place to stay. Thank you!!!!
For a 9-10 day stay in Kauai in September, both the North Shore and South Shore have distinct advantages depending on your priorities. Since you’re looking for a mix of gentle hikes, recreational biking, relaxation on the beach, nice cocktails, local food, and Napali boat tours, here’s a breakdown:
The North Shore (around Hanalei, Princeville, and Kilauea) is lush, scenic, and quieter than the South Shore. It offers:
The South Shore (Poipu, Koloa) is sunnier and drier, which is excellent for more predictable beach days. It features:
Considering your interests—relaxing with beach access, nice cocktails, moderate activity, and Napali tours—both shores work, but they offer slightly different vibes. If you prefer a laid-back, scenic, and slightly more local feel, the North Shore is ideal. If you want sun, convenience, and more resort-style amenities, the South Shore is more practical.
Recommended places to stay with A/C and beach access:
Tips for your trip:
In summary, for a balance of relaxation, gentle adventure, and local food & drinks, the South Shore may be slightly more convenient, but the North Shore offers unmatched scenic beauty and a tranquil Hawaiian vibe. Both areas have great options for A/C accommodations right on or near the beach.
