SF with kids!

We're a family of 5 with kids 10, 6, and 4. We're planning a trip for July to SF, Carmel, Yosemite, and maybe Sequoia NP (trying to decide on that). I thought we would stay in the SF area for 3 (?) nights when we arrive. At first I thought we'd stay in Sausalito or somewhere in that area and just do a day trip into the city one day, but now I'm thinking we should probably just stay in SF. Looking at hotels near Fishermans Wharf. We've been to SF twice but that was more than 10 years ago (pre kids). Is it generally somewhat safe to walk around with kids in the touristy areas? I've heard about safety/crime issues, but I heard the same thing about Seattle and we were fine walking with the kids there. If we do stay on the other side of the GGB, I'm assuming parking would be pretty difficult if we come over for the day. I first thought it might be nice to stay over there because it seems more quaint and natural.

I'm rambling, but does anyone have insight into what area to stay, or how the city is with little kids in tow? Thanks so much!

For a family visiting San Francisco with kids aged 10, 6, and 4, staying in the city itself is generally more convenient than staying across the Golden Gate in Sausalito, especially for a short 3-night trip. While Sausalito is charming and quieter, staying there adds daily commuting time, tolls, and parking challenges if you want to visit Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, and other downtown attractions.

Fisherman’s Wharf and nearby areas are very touristy, which has both pros and cons. There is usually a strong police presence and many families around, so daytime walks are generally safe. Like any major city, you’ll want to exercise standard precautions: keep an eye on belongings, avoid poorly lit streets at night, and be cautious around areas like parts of North Beach after dark. For a daytime itinerary with young kids, these areas are fine.

Here are some family-friendly areas to consider for your stay in San Francisco:

  • Fisherman’s Wharf / Pier 39: Very convenient for families with kids. Easy access to the waterfront, sea lions, souvenir shops, and family-friendly dining. Many hotels here cater to tourists, and you can easily walk or take short rides to Ghirardelli Square, the Exploratorium, or take a ferry to Alcatraz.
  • Union Square / Financial District: Centrally located with easy transit options. Not as picturesque as the Wharf, but convenient for shopping, dining, and cable car access. Good if you plan to do multiple day trips within the city.
  • Marina / Cow Hollow: Safe, quieter, and more residential. Near Crissy Field and the Palace of Fine Arts, which are excellent for kids to run around and play. Offers nice views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Regarding transportation:

  • Parking in SF can be expensive and limited, especially near the Wharf and downtown. If you plan to stay in the city, consider using rideshares, public transit, or hotel parking options.
  • If you stay in Sausalito, you will need to factor in either bridge traffic and parking on the city side or using the ferry, which can be fun but takes more time and requires planning with young kids.

In summary, for ease and family convenience, a hotel near Fisherman’s Wharf or the Marina is recommended. You’ll be in walking distance of key attractions, have plenty of family-friendly restaurants nearby, and avoid the daily commute from across the Golden Gate. Safety is generally fine in these touristy areas during the day, just maintain normal city awareness.

Additional tips:

  • Bring a stroller for the youngest child; SF streets can be hilly and tiring.
  • Plan early morning or late afternoon visits to popular attractions to avoid crowds.
  • Use cable cars for fun transportation and sightseeing with the kids—it’s an iconic SF experience.
