Nice pools and swimmable beach?

Hello,

Mom here travelling to Kauai with two kids 12 & 14 for a week in August and trying to decide where to stay....

We're looking for a resort with

a great pool

restaurants on site or close by

swimmable beach

Do all of these exist in one place on Kauai?

We're adventurous but plan to take it pretty easy this trip and not be go, go go. Want to spend plenty of time relaxing on site at the resort with some exploring of beaches further afield, hikes, sight seeing. FWIW we have already been to Oahu and Hawaii Big Island as a family and stayed in combination of hotel/resort/vacation rentals while there.

Yes, Kauai has several resorts in the Poipu/Koloa area that combine great pools, swimmable beaches, and convenient dining options. Poipu is ideal for families looking for a mix of relaxation and some light adventure. The south shore generally has calmer waters compared to the north shore, which can be rough and less suitable for casual swimming, especially in August.

Top Resort Options in Poipu for Families:

  • The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa: This is the most popular family-friendly resort in Poipu. It features multiple pools, including a saltwater lagoon pool with a waterslide and a separate kids’ pool. The beach is swimmable with lifeguards, and there are several restaurants and bars on site. You can also enjoy spa services and casual access to nearby Poipu shops.
  • Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu: This resort offers spacious villa-style accommodations with full kitchens, multiple pools, and access to nearby Poipu Beach. Swimmable areas are within walking distance, and the resort has restaurants and cafes close by.
  • Sheraton Kauai Resort: Located directly on Poipu Beach, it has a decent pool area and direct beach access. On-site dining is available, though options are more limited than the Grand Hyatt. It’s a good choice if you want simplicity and easy access to the sand and surf.

Additional Tips:

  • Poipu Beach Park itself is great for kids and swimming, with a protected cove that is generally safe. Even if your resort doesn’t sit directly on the beach, most are within a short walk or shuttle ride.
  • August is warm and relatively calm, but always check daily ocean conditions and heed lifeguard advice for swimming safety.
  • For exploring, Poipu has several scenic spots, small hikes, and local shops that are easy to reach without spending long hours in the car.
  • Booking early is recommended, as these resorts fill quickly during summer vacation.

In summary, yes—you can find a resort on Kauai’s south shore that combines swimmable beaches, excellent pools, and convenient dining for a family-friendly, relaxing vacation. Poipu, especially the Grand Hyatt and Koloa Landing, are the best bets to meet all your requirements in one place while keeping some flexibility for light adventure and sightseeing nearby.
