Hi!
Upcoming trip next week! Last year our Ogunquit beach trip it rained every day and now I’m learning water quality is a possible issue. Trying to do some planning with small kids? Is the water checked daily? If Main Beach has an advisory would Footbridge be a possibility or is that whole stretch of the coast typically grouped together? Really hoping Main Beach is good we love parking the car at the hotel and not moving! Thanks!
It's great that you're planning another trip to Ogunquit! To address your concerns about water quality, here's what you need to know:
1. Water Quality Checks: Yes, the water quality at Ogunquit Beach (Main Beach) is regularly tested during the summer months. The beach is monitored for bacterial levels, particularly for Enterococcus bacteria, which is used as an indicator of water quality. Water quality testing results are typically available daily, and any advisories or closures would be posted to the Ogunquit town website or through local news outlets.
2. Advisory System: If Main Beach has an advisory due to water quality issues, you might be able to visit other beaches nearby. Footbridge Beach, which is located just to the south of Main Beach, is a great alternative. However, while Ogunquit Beach and Footbridge Beach are part of the same coastal area, they are generally considered separate entities when it comes to water quality testing. This means that if Main Beach has an advisory, it doesn't necessarily mean that Footbridge Beach will have one as well.
3. Footbridge Beach as an Option: If Main Beach has a water quality advisory, Footbridge Beach would be a reasonable backup. Footbridge Beach tends to be quieter and less crowded than Main Beach, making it a nice option for families with small kids. Additionally, it offers beautiful views and a more relaxed atmosphere. The water is generally of good quality, and it’s a lovely spot to enjoy if Main Beach isn't ideal for swimming.
4. Planning with Small Kids: Since you're traveling with small kids, it's always a good idea to check the water quality in advance before heading out to the beach. Ogunquit has plenty of family-friendly amenities, and many hotels are within walking distance of the beach, so you'll be able to relax and enjoy your time without having to drive around much.
In conclusion, if Main Beach has an advisory, Footbridge Beach is a great alternative, but you should check the latest water quality updates to be sure. With the water being regularly tested, you'll have up-to-date information to help plan your beach days!
