Where to stay in Dunhuang ?

Hi all,

I'll stay 2 nights in Dunhuang and wondering if I should stay near the market (Dunhuang hotel ??) or at the Silk Road hotel which looks very nice but quite far from the city.

Any recommandations ?

When deciding where to stay in Dunhuang for 2 nights, your choice largely depends on convenience, comfort, and what you want to experience during your visit.

Staying near the city center, such as near the market or at Dunhuang Hotel, offers several advantages:

  • Close proximity to local restaurants, shops, and the night market, making it easy to explore on foot without needing taxis.
  • Better for experiencing the city’s local life and having quick access to public transportation or tour pick-ups.
  • Generally more convenient if you plan to spend time in the city rather than the outskirts.

Staying at a more distant option like the Silk Road Hotel has different benefits:

  • Often newer, more spacious, and with higher-end facilities, providing a comfortable stay after long travel days.
  • Quieter and less crowded, which can be nice if you prefer a more peaceful environment.
  • May include shuttle services to major attractions like the Mogao Caves or Crescent Lake, but you will need taxis or tours for most activities.

Recommendation:

  • If your priority is convenience, walking around the city, and being close to dining and shopping options, staying near the market (Dunhuang Hotel area) is ideal.
  • If your priority is comfort, modern amenities, and a quieter environment, the Silk Road Hotel is a good choice, but plan for transportation to most attractions.
  • For 2 nights, unless you prefer luxury, staying near the city center is usually more practical to maximize your sightseeing time.

In either case, book your accommodation early, especially during peak travel seasons, as Dunhuang can get busy with tourists visiting the Mogao Caves and desert attractions.
