Clothes to take to Alaska in late June

Hi. We’ll be cruising to Alaska leaving June 24th.

Could anyone there advise me what kind of clothes to pack. EG a warm coat or just a hoodie.

Long pants or capris. Short or long sleeves. I know no-one is psychic but just a rough idea would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Traveling to Alaska in late June generally means mild to cool temperatures, but the weather can be unpredictable. You can expect daytime highs to range from the mid-50s to mid-60s °F (13–18°C) along the coast, with cooler mornings and evenings. Rain and wind are also possibilities, especially near glaciers or on open water excursions.

Layering is the key to staying comfortable. Here are detailed suggestions:

  • Outerwear: A warm, waterproof, and windproof jacket is essential. A hoodie alone may not be sufficient, especially on deck or during excursions. A light down or synthetic insulated coat works well.
  • Mid-layers: Fleece or wool sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, or light pullovers for warmth. These can be added or removed depending on the weather.
  • Base layers: Breathable long-sleeve or short-sleeve shirts, especially for active excursions like hiking.
  • Pants: Long pants are recommended for most days, especially for wildlife viewing, boat tours, or hiking. Some people pack lightweight, quick-dry pants or even convertible pants. Capris can be worn on warmer days, but it’s safer to have at least one pair of long pants.
  • Footwear: Comfortable, waterproof walking shoes or light hiking boots. Non-slip soles are important for boat decks and wet surfaces. Bring warm socks.
  • Accessories: A warm hat, gloves, and a scarf for windy or rainy days. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also useful for sunny days, as UV can be strong reflecting off water or glaciers.

Other items to consider packing:

  • Rain gear (poncho or packable rain jacket) for excursions.
  • Swimsuit if your ship has a pool or hot tub.
  • Daypack for shore excursions with a water bottle and layers you can add or remove.

Overall, plan to dress in layers so you can adjust as temperatures and conditions change. Late June is generally comfortable, but Alaska’s weather is famously variable, so having waterproof and warm outer layers will keep you comfortable both on board and during shore excursions.
