Independence mine Qs

Hi! We are leaving tomorrow for 2 weeks in Alaska (self-drive land tour) and i'm checking on the details of places we are visiting. I am confused about Independence Mine !

1. Independence Mine website directs me to Salmon Berry Tours - where they offer 45-min tour of the mine. I called Salmon Berry, they say visitors are free to visit on their own (for free), the tours are just guided tours that give more background. Anyone done the tours vs on their own?

2. How to get there/ road conditions? I keep reading about unpaved/ gravel road on the brochure but I can't tell where the unpaved section begins? We will be driving a rental car up from Anchorage and want to be sure the road is paved. On google maps the route it suggests is:

Follow AK-1 N to Trunk Rd in Gateway. Take the Trunk Rd exit from AK-3 N (36 miles)

Follow Trunk Rd and N Palmer Fishhook Rd to Gold Cord Rd in Fishhook (22 miles)

Is this the correct route? Or should I

Follow AK-1N to Palmer, then take the Palmer-Fishhook Road turnoff at Mile 49.5 of the Glenn Highway?

After our visit, we will head to Glacier View for overnight. For that direction, I'm pretty sure we want to follow the Palmer-Fishhook road to Glenn highway and then continue eastward.

Thanks in advance for helping me sort out my confusion.

Independence Mine State Historical Park is a popular stop near Palmer, Alaska, and it’s understandable to want clarity on visiting logistics. Here’s a detailed breakdown based on what other visitors have experienced.

1. Guided Tour vs Self-Guided Visit

You are correct that the site itself is free to explore. The Salmon Berry Tours 45-minute guided tour is optional. The tour provides additional historical context, stories of miners, and information about the gold mining era that you won’t get just by walking around. Many visitors who are interested in history, photography, or want a richer understanding of the site find the tour valuable. If your group prefers flexibility and a quick visit, you can explore on your own, follow the marked trails, and read the interpretive signs.

  • Guided tour: deeper historical context, anecdotes, and background on mining life.
  • Self-guided: free, more flexible, can spend more or less time at each structure.
  • Combination: some visitors do a short self-guided walk first, then join a tour to fill in details.

2. Directions and Road Conditions

For most visitors driving a rental car from Anchorage, the recommended route is:

  • Take AK-1 North (Glenn Highway) to Palmer.
  • At Mile 49.5 of the Glenn Highway, turn onto Palmer-Fishhook Road.
  • Follow Palmer-Fishhook Road to Gold Cord Road, which leads directly to Independence Mine.

The key points about road conditions:

  • The Glenn Highway and Palmer-Fishhook Road are paved and suitable for standard rental cars.
  • Gold Cord Road is a short stretch (a few miles) of paved or well-maintained gravel; most rental cars can handle it without issue.
  • The route via Trunk Road and N Palmer Fishhook Road can be confusing and may include longer unpaved stretches, so the Palmer-Fishhook Road turnoff from the Glenn Highway is generally recommended for simplicity and safety.

3. Continuing to Glacier View

After visiting Independence Mine, to reach Glacier View for the overnight stay:

  • Return along Gold Cord Road to Palmer-Fishhook Road.
  • Turn back onto the Glenn Highway heading east.
  • Continue east toward your lodging at Glacier View. The highways are paved and easy to navigate.

Overall, Independence Mine is very accessible from Anchorage, even for a rental car, and you can tailor your visit to include a guided tour or simply enjoy exploring the historic buildings and trails on your own.
