Advice Pls ~ Shanghai in December

It's our family's first time to Shanghai, planned for December for a week only.

Would like to seek advice on the weather. Is it really cold, do we need to wear thermals? We have been to Hokkaido winter and would like a comparison so as to pack sufficiently.

Would you recommend Shanghai Disney or Ocean Park for teenagers?

Any recommended areas to stay - convenient to shop, explore, eat within having to travel too far?

Most importantly, our return flight is at 8:15am, thus will need to reach airport at 5:15am? Would it be safer to stay at a hotel near airport, or is it ok to stay in town and arrange for airport transport?

Thank you ahead =))

Visiting Shanghai in December can be enjoyable, but it is important to understand the weather, attractions, and logistics to plan your trip effectively.

Weather and Clothing:

Shanghai in December is cold and damp but generally milder than Hokkaido. Average temperatures range from 3°C to 10°C (37°F to 50°F), and humidity can make it feel chillier. Snow is rare but possible.

  • Thermals are not strictly necessary if you have a good winter coat, sweaters, and layers, but light thermals can make walking outdoors more comfortable.
  • Waterproof shoes or warm, comfortable walking shoes are recommended due to occasional rain and damp streets.
  • Accessories like gloves, scarves, and hats are useful for early mornings or evenings.

Theme Parks for Teenagers:

Shanghai has several major attractions suitable for teenagers. Comparing Shanghai Disney Resort and Ocean Park:

  • Shanghai Disney Resort: Larger and more immersive, with rides, shows, and themed areas that appeal to teenagers. Ideal for a full-day experience.
  • Ocean Park (Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park): Focused on marine life and some thrill rides. Better if your family enjoys animal exhibits and educational experiences, but smaller in scale than Disney.

Recommended Areas to Stay:

For convenience, shopping, and dining, consider central neighborhoods:

  • The Bund / Nanjing East Road: Iconic views, shopping, and restaurants. Very central for first-time visitors.
  • People's Square / Nanjing West Road: Access to metro lines, museums, and major shopping malls.
  • French Concession: Charming streets, cafes, boutique shops, and easier access to local food.

Early Morning Flight Considerations:

Your flight at 8:15am requires arrival at Shanghai Pudong International Airport around 5:15am. Consider the following:

  • Staying near Pudong Airport can reduce stress for early flights but limits evening activities in the city.
  • Staying in central Shanghai is feasible if you arrange a reliable early-morning transfer, such as a pre-booked taxi, airport shuttle, or ride-hailing service. Allow extra buffer time due to traffic unpredictability.
  • Metro is not recommended for this early hour, as services may not start early enough.

In summary, pack warm layered clothing but heavy thermals are optional, prioritize Shanghai Disney for teenagers, stay in central areas like The Bund, People's Square, or French Concession for convenience, and for early morning flights, either book a hotel near Pudong Airport or arrange a reliable early taxi from central Shanghai.
