Christmas Day on the Beach
Hi all, apologies in advance for the rambling message. We’ve decided for the first time to go somewhere warm for Christmas so we’re going all out and we’re coming over from the UK to get some winter sun and spend Christmas by the beach. 2 kids, mum, dad and 2 grandparents, we were initially looking at Miami but after a bit of research decided we wanted somewhere a bit more relaxed and laid back but still enough happening to entertain the whole party and came across LBTS.
Arriving on 24th and leaving on 29th Dec, I just have a few questions to help with the planning.
Will restaurants be open on Christmas Day and if so would we need to book well in advance?
If we’re staying just outside LBTS, will there be public transport or taxis on Christmas Day?
Any recommendations of ‘must do’s’ or ‘not to be missed’ whilst we’re there.
My wife would like pizza and prosecco on the beach whilst we are there but I’ve read somewhere that alcohol is not permitted on the beach, is this correct?
There will probably be a few more questions as we get closer to the time.
Thank you all in advance and any advice or recommendations will be very much appreciated….😎🎅🎅
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (LBTS) is a wonderful choice for a relaxed and family-friendly Christmas getaway in Florida. It offers a small-town beach vibe while still being close to restaurants, shops, and activities suitable for all ages.
Restaurants on Christmas Day:
- Some local restaurants do open on Christmas Day, but many close for the holiday. Those that are open often require reservations well in advance, especially for a larger group. Consider making bookings as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
- Resorts and hotels in the area may offer special Christmas menus and buffets, which can be a convenient option for families.
Public Transport and Taxis:
- LBTS is small, and most things are within a short driving distance. Public transport is limited, and on Christmas Day, bus services may not run or will have a reduced schedule.
- Taxis and ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft do operate, but it’s a good idea to book in advance if possible, as demand may be high on a holiday.
Must-Do Activities:
- Stroll along the charming pier and beach area in LBTS.
- Snorkeling or diving – the area has coral reefs right off the beach, making it easy for a half-day adventure.
- Explore nearby Hugh Taylor Birch State Park or Anne Kolb Nature Center for light hiking, kayaking, or wildlife viewing.
- Visit the nearby Bonnet House Museum & Gardens in Fort Lauderdale for a mix of history and beautiful gardens.
- Check out Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale for shopping, dining, and a lively atmosphere.
Beach and Alcohol Rules:
- Generally, public beaches in Broward County do not permit alcohol. Many locals suggest bringing a non-alcoholic sparkling beverage to enjoy on the beach.
- For pizza and prosecco vibes, you might consider ordering takeout and enjoying it on a hotel balcony, terrace, or a private area where alcohol is permitted.
Other Tips:
- LBTS is very walkable, so if you stay just outside the main area, walking or biking is feasible for nearby shops and restaurants.
- Consider booking activities like snorkeling or boat tours in advance, as some operators may have reduced availability around the holidays.
- Pack light layers for December – days are usually warm, but evenings can be cooler.
Overall, LBTS provides a quieter, family-friendly environment while still offering a variety of things to do. With a bit of planning for meals and activities, your Christmas holiday there should be relaxing and memorable.
