First time visiting question
Coming to Bar Harbor end of September through first week of October. Not sure what to expect temperature and weather wise. We live in Texas so heat isn’t an issue but yes below 70 is “Cool” to us so I’m just gauging what to pack. Thanks in advance
Hi there! Visiting Bar Harbor at the end of September through the first week of October is a fantastic choice! It’s a beautiful time to visit with the fall foliage beginning to turn, and the crowds from summer will be starting to thin out. Here's what to expect weather-wise and what to pack for your trip:
Weather and Temperature in Bar Harbor (Late September to Early October):
During this time, the weather in Bar Harbor is usually cool but pleasant, with average daytime temperatures ranging between 55°F (13°C) and 70°F (21°C). It can get chillier in the mornings and evenings, sometimes dipping into the 40s (around 5-9°C), especially toward the end of September and into early October. There’s also a chance of rain, so it's a good idea to prepare for some wet weather. It's typically more overcast and breezy along the coast, but you’ll likely have plenty of crisp, clear days as well.
What to Pack:
Since you're used to warmer weather, you may want to bring layers to stay comfortable. Here are some items you should consider packing:
- Layered Clothing: Pack long-sleeve shirts, light sweaters, and lightweight jackets that can be easily layered. A fleece jacket or a light insulated jacket will be great for cooler mornings and evenings.
- Waterproof Jacket: A waterproof or water-resistant jacket is a must. September and October can bring some rain, so having a lightweight rain jacket or a windbreaker will help keep you comfortable during any showers.
- Comfortable Shoes: If you plan to do any hiking or walking around Acadia National Park, bring sturdy, comfortable shoes or hiking boots. A pair of casual shoes for sightseeing and dinners in Bar Harbor is also a good idea.
- Warm Accessories: Consider packing a scarf, hat, and gloves, especially if you plan to visit Cadillac Mountain or if you're out early in the morning when temperatures can dip. These accessories aren’t essential, but it’s always good to be prepared for chilly mornings.
- Sunscreen and Sunglasses: Even in cooler weather, the sun can be strong, especially when it reflects off the water or bright foliage. Be sure to pack sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.
Additional Tips:
- Check the forecast: Be sure to check the weather forecast a few days before your trip to get a more accurate idea of what to expect. Bar Harbor can sometimes experience microclimates, especially near the coast, so it’s good to be prepared for changing conditions.
- Bring a camera: The fall colors in Acadia National Park are stunning, and you’ll likely want to capture the beauty of the area. Pack a camera or your phone to take photos of the foliage and the breathtaking views.
Overall, late September to early October is a lovely time to visit, and with the right layers and a bit of flexibility for the weather, you’ll have an amazing time exploring the beauty of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park!
