1 Day North Big Sur info

Hello,

An opportunity to visit the northern part of the Big Sur has become available to us for one day in a few weeks time. We have 2 nights in Santa Cruz and plan to use our 1 whole day stopping off at points.

We are a family of 4 with children ages 6 and 9, would anyone be able to suggest a very rough itinerary of points that are worth stopping at? We don't mind being out for the whole day but would rather spend time at places that people would recommend.

Any information would be greatly received, cheers Trevor

Visiting the northern part of Big Sur in one day from Santa Cruz is very doable and offers a chance to experience some of the most iconic coastal scenery in California. With children aged 6 and 9, it’s best to balance scenic stops, short hikes, and places where they can stretch their legs.

Here is a rough itinerary for a full day trip along the northern Big Sur coast:

  • Start early from Santa Cruz: Plan to leave around 7:00 AM to maximize daylight and avoid some of the tourist traffic along Highway 1.
  • Stop at Capitola Village: Just south of Santa Cruz, this charming seaside town has a beach area where kids can run around and grab a quick breakfast if needed.
  • Santa Cruz Surfing Beach: Consider a short stop at Cowell Beach or Main Beach to watch surfers and take a short walk on the boardwalk.
  • Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park: Drive south and stop for a picnic or a short, family-friendly hike. The Big Sur River Gorge Trail or Pfeiffer Falls Trail are both suitable for kids and offer beautiful scenery.
  • Bixby Creek Bridge: One of the most iconic spots in Big Sur. Stop for photos and enjoy the stunning view of the coastline.
  • Garrapata State Park: A great spot for a short coastal walk along easy trails with dramatic ocean views. The Soberanes Point Trail is manageable with children.
  • Lunch in Big Sur Village: There are a few family-friendly restaurants and cafes where you can grab a bite and rest before continuing south. Picnic spots are also available.
  • Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park: Famous for McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall that drops directly onto the beach. The short, paved trail to the viewpoint is easy for children and highly rewarding visually.
  • Return north along Highway 1: Consider stopping at other scenic pullouts along the way, such as Andrew Molera State Park or Sand Dollar Beach, depending on time and energy.

Additional tips for a smooth trip:

  • Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a picnic lunch, as food options along Big Sur can be limited and crowded.
  • Dress in layers; the coast can be cool and foggy even in summer.
  • Plan for restroom stops; facilities are limited and can be crowded at popular stops.
  • Start heading back by mid-afternoon to ensure you get back to Santa Cruz before dark.

This itinerary provides a mix of iconic views, short hikes, and child-friendly activities, allowing your family to enjoy a full day exploring northern Big Sur without feeling rushed.
